THE PASSIVE VOICE

ACTIVE : (a) Mary helped the boy Form of the passive : be+past participle
S V O In the passive, the object of an active verb
PASSIVE : (b) The boy was helped by Mary becomes the subject of the passive verb; “the
S V boy”in (a) becomes the subject of the verb in (b),
(a) and (b) have the same meaning.
ACTIVE : © An accident happened Only transitive verbs (verbs that are followed by an

ACTIVE PASSIVE
Simple present Mary helps John. John is helped by Mary.
Present progressive Mary is helping John. John is being helped by Mary.
Present perfect Mary has helped John. John has been helped by Mary.
Simple past Mary helped John. John helped by Mary.
Past progressive Mary was helping John. John was being helped by Mary.
Simple future Mary will help John. John will be helped by Mary.
Be going to Mary is going to help John. John is going to be helped by Mary.
Future perfect Mary will have helped John. John will have been helped by Mary.
*The progressive forms of the present perfect, past perfect, future, and future perfect are very rarely used in the passive.

A-1 SUBJECTS, VERBS, AND OBJECTS

(a) Birds fly. Almost all English sentences contain a subject (S) and a verb (V). the verb may or
(Noun) (Verb) may not be followed by an object (O)

(b) The baby cried. VERBS : Verbs that are followed by an object , as in (a) and (b), are called
(Noun) (Verb) intransitive verbs. Common intransitive verbs : agree, arrive, come, cry, exist, go,
happen, live, occur, rain, rise, sleep, stay, walk.

(C) The student needs a pen Verbs that are followed by an object, as in © and (d), are called transitive verbs.
(Noun) (Verb) (Noun) Common transitive verbs: build, cut , find like, make, need, send, use, want.

S V O Some verbd can be either intransitive or transitive.


(c) My friend enjoyed the party. Intransitive : A student studies.
(Noun) (Verb) (Noun) Transitive : A student studies books.

SUBJECTS AND OBJECTS : The subjects and objects of verbs are nouns (or
pronouns). Examples of Nouns: person, place, thing, John, Asia, pen, information,
appearance, amusement.
