Unit Plan Rationale:

This is a week-long unit plan that focuses on the anatomy, injury prevention and taping of

the shoulder and upper am. This unit aims to gain a deeper understanding of the way the human

body moves, how to protect different bones, muscles, and joints from injury and to learn other

exercises and taping techniques to help rehabilitate previously injured muscles and bones.

Moreover, I hope students find a passion for sports medicine and continue to train sports teams

and use this information in their daily lives.

Throughout this unit, I will focus on four main concepts:

 The relationship between rest and recovery;

 The link between proper training and injury prevention;

 Understanding how the body functions during physical activity;

 The importance of knowing your body when it comes to injuries and

treatment

I will accomplish them by first teaching students in relevant and engaging ways, as this

information is based on real-world experiences. Second, getting students to apply their

knowledge through taping each other, partaking in self-directed learning and granting students

autonomy over their education in the different ways they want to represent their findings. Third,

designing a classroom environment that is inclusive and safe for students to make mistakes and

grow from one another will allow everyone to thrive.

General Outcomes:
o CTS Outcome 3. Explain basic physiological principles related to various injuries and illnesses that
may occur during recreation or sporting events and activities

o CTS Outcome 4. Demonstrate the appropriate management and treatment of injuries that can occur
during recreation activities and sporting events using simulations

o HSS Outcome 4: Apply basic principles of movement that contribute to health and wellness

o CTS Outcome 5. Demonstrate basic taping and strapping of minor injuries in simulations
o HSS Outcome 5. Explain basic principles of anatomy, physiology and disease related to systems of the
human body
o HCS1050 Outcome 1: Explain the basic anatomy and physiology of the skeletal system

Resources that I will use during this unit:

 Chapter 11 & 12 Quiz: (paper copy) Summative

Students will write a short online chapter quiz based on the unit chapter 11 & 12.

 Shoulder/Upper Arm Unit Test: Summative

 Kahoot quizzes: Formative

Kahoot quizzes will include previous class materials. This is a fantastic tool to see what areas I need
to go over, and it allows students to see where they are with the class information.

 Exit Slips: Formative

This will be used periodically throughout the unit to test the student's knowledge.

 Wrist Taping Test: Summative

Students will be assessed on their ability to tape an injured list. Students must do this under 10
minutes without any extra assistance. This is a great practice for students if they have to tape a wrist
on a playing field.

 Chapter 11 & 12 Worksheet: Formative

For each chapter, I will give students an activity that allows them to use the textbook as a resource
and study tool. This gets students to think critically and navigate through the textbook and pull
important information out.

 Shoulder/Upper Arm Work Booklet: Summative

This worksheet will allow students to test themselves and find the areas that they need more
clarification and study time on. This worksheet can be used as a study tool.

 Jeopardy:  Formative

Jeopardy will be played as a review for the student's foot unit exam. This is an excellent resource for
students to be aware of the areas they may need to focus on.

 Students will be given an anatomy booklet for this unit. Everything below will be included in
this booklet (taping chart, injury chart, fill-in-the-blank-notes, taping review tapes and
labelling diagrams). This booklet's goal is for students to have all their study resources, notes,
and worksheets in one area and are easy to navigate.
