Week 2

Topic 2: Culture and Education: ‘Looking back and looking forward’

Learning Outcomes

1. Explain the evolution (including misunderstanding) of the concept of culture.


2. Explain the perspective--culture as a contested meaning-making process.
3. Discuss the role of power (many forms) in shaping and reshaping culture in the global-local
contexts.
4. Analyze how culture impact education and its implications for the teaching-learning process.
5. Provide personal takeaways/positionalities on how culture affects the educative process.

Essential Questions

1. What are the various configurations of the concept of culture?


2. Why is a complicated/contested concept of culture important?
3. How does power shape and reshape the nature of culture?
4. What are the implications of the evolution of the concept of culture for education?
5. What are your critical takeaways/positionalities on the impact of culture on education?

Learning Activities

1. The presenters will post their outputs in the UPV-LMS (or in any other platforms
convenient to the class) including their takeaways.
Date of Submission: March 13, 2021(Saturday morning)

2. (Pamulong-pulong sa Educ. 291). Use the LMS forum feature for you to ENGAGE
with each other. Observe the following:
a. Post your takeaways (which may include your new learnings) –
reflections/reactions/positions regarding the topic presentation/s. Post one (1)
substantial (refer to our rubrics) takeaway per article. (20 points)
b. Engage with the presenters/classmates’ takeaways in the form of asking
questions/clarifications/additional inputs (reflections, reactions, insights, etc.)
Post at most four (4) engagements/interactions. Refer to our rubrics.

The trajectory of your takeaways and other forms of engagement in the Pamulong-pulong in EDFD 202
should be geared towards the achievement of our learning outcomes.
