Research Is A Key To Progress. There Can Be No Progress Without Research in Almost If Not All Human Endeavors

This document discusses the importance of research and outlines the scientific method of research. It notes that research is essential for progress in many fields and helps teachers and policymakers make informed decisions. The scientific method involves identifying a problem, forming a hypothesis, collecting and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and applying conclusions back to the original hypothesis. Research aims to improve education by revising curricula and instruction based on findings. The document also categorizes different types of research and identifies potential hindrances to the scientific process like tradition and inaccurate observations.

Introduction

Research is a key to progress. There can be no progress without research

in almost if not all human endeavors. In government, in education, in trade and
commerce, and in all types and kinds of industries, research is vital and essential.
Research gives teachers and also policy-makers important knowledge to use in
decision-making for the benefit of learners and their families.
Research enables teachers to come up with informed decision on what to teach and
how to teach. It can help them to be more knowledgeable about how to fit their teaching
with the developmental levels of our learners.
Research is a purposive, systematic and scientific process of gathering, analyzing,
classifying, organizing, presenting, and interpreting data for the solution of a problem,
for prediction, for invention, for the discovery of truth, or for the expansion or
verification of existing knowledge, all for the preservation and improvement of the
quality of human life.

The Scientific Method of Research

One important principle in research is adherence to the scientific method, Dewey
gave us 5 steps of this method:
1. Identify and define the problem
2. Determine the hypothesis
3. Collect and analyze data
4. Formulate conclusions
5. Apply conclusions to the original hypothesis

There are various purposes of research, but in education, its purpose is to improve
educational practices for raising the quality of school products. Research survey often
result in the revision of curricula and instructional innovations to maximize the
effectiveness of the learning process.

Characteristics of a Good Research

1. Systematic
2. Controlled
3. Empirical
4. Analytical
5. Objective, unbiased and logical
6. Employs hypothesis
7. Employs quantitative or statistical methods
8. Original work
9. Done by an expert
10. Accurate investigation, observation and description
11. Patient and unhurried activity
12. Requires an effort-making capacity
13. Requires courage
Kinds and classification of research
1.  According to purpose - example of this is the directive research which aims to
remedy an unsatisfactory condition if there is any.
2.  According to goal - may be classified as basic or pure research and applied
research.
3.  According to the levels of investigation - exploratory research, descriptive
research, and experimental research belong to this category.
4.  According to the type of analysis -analytic or holistic
5.  According to scope - action research may be classified as such
6.  According to choose of answers to problems - evaluation and developmental
research
7.  According to statistical content - quantitative and non-quantitative research
8.  According to time element - historical, descriptive and experimental research.
     A. Historical research describes what was.
     B. Descriptive research describes what is.
     C. Experimental research describes what will be.
These three methods of research are the major research methods, All other
methods, kinds, and types of research whatever they are called fall under these
three major methods.

Some Hindrances to Scientific Inquiry (Errors in Personal

Judgment)
1. Tradition
2. Authority
3. Inaccurate observation
4. Overgeneralization
5. Selective observation
6. Made-up information
7. Illogical reasoning
8. Ego-involvement in understanding
9. Mystification
10. To err is human
11. Dogmatism

The Scientific Method of Research

One of the characteristics of research is that, it is systematic. It follows the scientific
method of research which includes the following sequential steps:
1. Determining/recognizing the problem
2. Forming a hypothesis
3. Doing the library search
4. Designing the study
5. Developing the instruments for collecting data
6. Collecting the data
7. Analyzing the data
8. Determining implications and conclusions from findings
9. Making recommendations for further research
