Research Process

The document defines research and nursing research. Research is a systematic process of exploring phenomena through description, explanation, and establishing relationships. Nursing research specifically aims to develop knowledge about issues important to nursing practice, education, administration, and informatics. The importance of nursing research includes continued patient care improvement, evidence-based practice, and validating nursing as a profession. Research requires rational and analytical processes, with characteristics like clearly defined purpose and objectives, valid and reliable tools, and ethical practices like informed consent.

Definition of Research
• Research is a systematic method of exploring,
describing, explaining, relating or establishing
the existence of phenomenon, the factors that
cause change in the phenomenon and how
phenomenon influences other phenomenon
Definition of Nursing Research
• Nursing research is systematic inquiry
designed to develop knowledge about issues
of importance to the nursing profession
including practice, education, administration
and informatics
RESEARCH
• R – rational ways of thinking
• E – expert and exhaustive treatment
• S – search for solutions
• E – exactness
• A – analytical analysis of adequate data
• R – relationships between facts and theories
• C – constructive attitude/critical observation /
careful recording
• H – honesty and hard work in all aspects of the
treatment of the data
Importance of Nursing Research

• Continued improvement in patient care

• Evidence-based practice
• Reinforcement of nursing as a profession
• Today in this “cost containment” healthcare system to
document relevance and effectiveness of nursing practice
• To understand the varied dimensions of the profession
• To describe the characteristics of specific nursing situations
• To explain phenomena
• To initiate activities to promote desired patient outcomes
Importance of Research in Nursing
• Validation as a profession
• Scientific basis for practice(research in nursing, nursing
research)
• Accountability
• Improvement in nursing care
• Identifying role of nurse in changing society •
• Discovering new measures for nursing practice • Helps
to take prompt decisions
• Improves standard of nursing care
• Refining existing theories and discovering new theories
Good characteristics of Research
• The purpose of research should be clearly defined and
common concepts being used
• The objectives should be clearly stated in measurable
and observable terms
• The research procedure used should be described in
sufficient detail to permit another researcher to repeat
the study for further advancement keeping the
continuity of what has been already attained.
• The research design should be carefully planned to
yield results that are as objective as possible.
• The validity and reliability of the research tools should
be checked carefully
• The analysis of data should be sufficiently adequate
to reveal its significance and the methods of analysis
should be appropriate.
• Conclusions should be confined to the results and
limited to the population which is the base data for
study.
• The researcher should report with complete
frankness, flaws in the research design and estimate
their effects upon the findings.
• Informed consent should be taken from the
participants after informing them about the study in
terms of their physical effects, psychological and
emotional effects.
• Principle of privacy, anonymity and confidentiality
should be followed.

Steps in Nursing Research

Phase 1: The Conceptual Phase

1. Formulating and Delimiting the Problem

2. Reviewing the Related Literature
3. Undertaking Clinical Fieldwork
4. Defining the Framework and Developing
Conceptual Definitions
5. Formulating Hypotheses
Phase 2: The Design and Planning
Phase
6. Selecting a Research Design
7. Developing Protocols for the Intervention
8. Identifying the Population to be Studied
9. Designing the Sampling Plan
10. Specifying Methods to Measure the Research
Variables
11. Developing Methods for Safeguarding
Human/Animal Rights
12. Finalizing and Reviewing the Research Plan
Phase 3: The Empirical Phase

13. Collecting the Data

14. Preparing the Data for Analysis

Phase 4: The Analytic Phase

15. Analyzing the Data

16. Interpreting the Results

Phase 5: The Dissemination Phase

• Communicating the Findings

• Utilizing the Findings in Practice

Role of nurse in Research
• • Advocate of client or respondents during study
• Major/ principal Investigator
• Evaluator of a research findings
• Research problem identifier
• Informants / respondents / subjects / participants
or sample population
• Consumer of research findings
• Associate or member of research team
Qualitative study
Conceptualizing and Planning a Qualitative
Study
• Identifying the Research Problem
• Doing Literature Reviews
• Selecting and Gaining Entrée into Research
Sites
• Research Design in Qualitative Studies
• Addressing Ethical Issues
• Conducting the Qualitative Study
• Disseminating Qualitative Findings
