Internet. The Internet has become the most accessible reference that people can use
anytime of the day and anywhere in the world. The Internet contains a huge amount of
resources, with almost any information available online.

Internet Literacy, or knowing how to maximize the services of the Interenet and

The Netiquette

The Internet has become a part of people’s

daily lives, and for some, it is a lifestyle. If you ask
who among 100 people around you have e-mail
addresses or social networking accounts, most
likely more than half of them would say they
either have one or maybe both.
SOURCE: https://www.time8.in/netiquette-the-need-of-the-hour/

The Internet has influenced people of all ages, gender, and races. Despite its vast
capability to help people in their daily living, some people tend to use it improperly for
their own benefit. Netiquette should be encouraged and applauded.

WHAT IS NETIQUETTE?
Netiquette, a contraction for “Internet etiquette” or “Network etiquette,”
means a set of rules, guidelines, and reminders for the proper behavior of Internet users
online. As a general rule, courtesy and respect should always be exercised or shown
whenever interacting with other Internet users.

BASIC NETIQUETTE
Here are some of the basic rules you should remember when you are online.
Remember that good manners and right conduct also apply online as much as in the
real world.

1. Use short and friendly words when responding to e-mail. It is

important to keep messages short, especially when writing an email or
typing in a chat room. By using common chat abbreviations or
acronyms, not only will the reader appreciate the brevity of the
message, it will save the author valuable time typing the message.
Remember, keep it short and be brief!

2. When sending messages on e-mails, forums, or chat rooms, do

not use all capital letters. It makes it look like you are shouting
your messages to the person you are talking to. Use all capital
letters only when emphasizing words or phrases. Also, reread and
check messages for spelling and grammar errors before sending
them.

3. When inside chat rooms, avoid using colorful capital letters in large fonts to get the
attention of other people and posting them several times filling the screen with repetitive
text. This bad habit is also referred to as “chat flooding.”

3

4. Avoid sending spam or forwarding e-mails that can possibly annoy or hurt people.

5. Always be polite. Avoid insulting someone or starting a flame war. Flame wars are very
common in chat rooms, newsgroups, and the comments section
of some web sites. They are already becoming a serious matter
on the internet.

When you are angry with someone or you want to react

negatively to a comment, be calm. Ignore the message or send
a polite message asking the “flamer” to explain what he or she
meant or, better yet, ask him or her to stop. It is a
misunderstanding that can be settled.

6. Guard your privacy and respect the privacy of other people. Sharing your username
and password with other people, even with someone close to you, is never a good idea.

Passwords and personal information such as your real

name, address, and telephone numbers should always be
kept confidential. At the same time, never ask other people
to give you their usernames and passwords. Also, do not
read other user’s e-mails.

Never post pictures of your friends on social

networking sites to make fun of them. You ight offend your
friend without meaning to.

7. Use the Internet responsibly. Avoid doing activities on the Internet that can place you
or other people in harm.

8. Be forgiving of the mistakes of other people, especially those

who are new in using the internet. Some peole you encounter
online may not be as good as you are in using the Internet. Keep
in mind that everyone was an Internet “newbie” once.

9. When using the Internet for researching or doing homework,

remember to cite or mention the sources of the information.
Mentioning the author’s name. The publication date, and the web
address from which you copied the information is a good habit when
copying information from web sites.

NETIQUETTE IN ONLINE EDUCATION

The rules for online learning and

classroom learning are virtually the
same: You have to study, take notes,
attend classes and participate in
discussions. In the classroom, your
words, gestures, posture and facial
expressions communicate your
thoughts and observations to your
classmates and teachers. But how do
you express yourself online, where
the written word is all they see?
SOURCE: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/how-to-get-kids-ready-to-video-chat-for-online-classes

During your online class, you will frequently be asked to participate in online
discussions and will occasionally do peer reviews of your classmates’ work. Here are 10
rules of netiquette that will help you successfully communicate as you learn online.

1) Make sure identification is clear in all communications. Begin with a salutation

(“Hi, James!”) and end with your signature (“Argie Zamora, Grade 8 - Ilog”).

2) Review what you wrote and try to interpret it objectively. When we speak face
to face and are misunderstood, we have an on-the-spot opportunity to rephrase
our words. In writing, we must strive twice as hard to be understood, as we do not
have the benefit of modifying or elaborating in real time. All caps (“I’M
SHOUTING”) and exclamation points (“Give me a break!!!”) can be misinterpreted
as intense anger or humor without the appropriate context.

3) If you wouldn’t say it face to face, don’t say it online. When you’re working
online, you’re safe behind a screen, but that’s no excuse to be ill-mannered or say
things you would never say in public.

4) Don’t assume everyone understands where you’re coming from. Sarcasm and
wit is often the spice of in-person conversation, but in online discussion, it can not
only lose its edge, it can bite! Your online classroom is made up of students who
have varied personality, backgrounds, lifestyles and geographic locations. With this
in mind, review what you wrote before contributing to the conversation and ask
yourself, “Will everyone get the joke?”

5) Don’t spam. Please don’t take advantage of your connection with the other
students in your online classroom to forward emails and links regarding your
political/spiritual beliefs or to sell your services.

5
Computer Education 8
6) Use emoticons. In casual chatroom settings, emoticons can
help convey feelings that may otherwise get lost in
translation, including humor, exasperation, exhaustion and
even confusion.

7) Respect others’ privacy. Don’t give out another student’s personal email address
without permission.

8) Remember, if it’s on the internet, it’s everywhere. Don’t share personal

information about yourself in a public online forum, especially something that
could put your safety or security at risk.

9) Follow the rules. Just as your Facebook Group posts guidelines related
to academic integrity and student expectations, online forums also have rules of
conduct. Make a point to read them every time, as they can vary from class to class.

10) Forgive and forget. If you’re offended by something another student says online,
keep in mind that you may have misunderstood their intentions. Give them the
benefit of the doubt.
The golden rule of netiquette in an online class or
environment is, do not do or say online what you would not
do or say offline. Since social media has become such an
integral part of our public image creating a profile that
represents you in a respectful and honest way, it is crucial to
ensure people can’t stumble upon status and posts that
make you look bad.

In the online world there will always be wandering eyeballs making it very
important to maintain proper netiquette.
