Digital Crystals - : Assignment 5 - 2 Parts 03.08.11 03.29.11

This document outlines a two-part assignment on generating abstract geometric forms. For part one, students are asked to select two basic geometries and establish rules to transform them along a path into new shapes using rotations, twists, scales and stretches. They then diagram this process and present the results. Part two requires extending lines from the transformed shapes to find new embedded geometries, then analyzing and presenting the composition using set rules and colors. The assignment is to be completed in Adobe Illustrator and printed on 11x17 sheets with labeled diagrams and identification information.

Assignment4
When you draw a line from a point to another point, you begin to articulate a certain dialogue between space and
moment. This variance between the two points can illustrate a unique system that is governed by a set of rules
ordained by the director. When the line continues to expand from its origin, it begins to transpire into a new order, deliv-
ered by a degree or a juxtaposition of other lines. As lines begin to meet one another, intersections are explored as ver-
tices where a object or shape emerges.

This study will investigate the potentiality of geometries as a fundamental emergence of two or three basic geometries
selected by the user. The geometric shapes will determine the direct order but the user will take the few lines that
emerge from the shape as a radiancy transpiring selection that will interact with its neighboring segments and connect
with opposing systems. The idea is to explore the geometries that emerge from the inner-connective segments as they
meet with each other and extend beyond the current system.

Part I:
Previously, you have explored lines, segments, and two basic geometries as an abstractive expression from your
architectural collage. This exercise will continue to build on your previous examination but enhance your critical think-
ing abilities through diagrammatic systems, geometric formations, and abstractive representations. These abstract ele-
ments will begin to emerge only as you begin to establish a set of rules that will direct the next step and so on.
Follow the steps thoroughly and begin examine each step not as a required synopsis but as a analytic creative pro-
cess.

Part 1 is due March 22nd/24th.

+ assigned 03.08.11
+ due 03.29.11

Part I:

Step 1: assign 2 geometries

Step 2: set a path.

You will create a path that your geometry will follow. This transition can follow a rhythmmatic system that follows
a movement diagram or any other device. The idea is that you select up to 4 possible movements on separate layers.
This transition can either extend the full length of the page from one edge to another or simple stop in mid-space (with
a reason). It is up to you to show this transition while incorporating the following methods of altering the geometry; rota-
tion, twisting, scaling, and/or stretching. The geometry will be a “repetitive” simulation that will change according to a
set of rules you will establish.

Step 3: You will show the “path finder” that your geometry will follow as a separate process.

Step 4: You will show the transition of geometries as the move along the “path finder”, illustrating the methods men-
tioned above; incorporate at least 2 methods for each transition geometric system.

Step 5: Then on a 11x17 sheet, you will begin to layout on your sheet these steps as a process development showing
the following; the 2 geometries (min), the path finding (min 3), and the transitional geometric forms (min. 3). Please
note, that your transitional geometric forms will take the majority of your canvas space.

Part I:

Step 6: Label the process development with respect to their procedures. This is your first take on how well you perceive
a layout system and how critically you can asses geometries that emerge from one another as the overlay each other.

Step 7: Use fonts; Myriad, Helvetica, or Microsoft San Serif, at the following sizes:
1. Place title of project either at the top/middle/bottom of page (what you perceive to be expressive
to the project). Use font size 48 (max).
2. Your reference text with respect to the process development should be labeled under each draw-
ing. Here you will use font size 12.
3. Your identification will be placed at the LOWER RIGHT-HAND CORNER of your canvas as font
size 12.
4. You will use the same font type for everything!
Step 8: Save files as:
04.01_FirstNameInitialLastName_TitleOfProject.ai
04.01_FirstNameInitialLastName_TitleOfProject.pdf (you will use this file to print)

Step 9: PRINT!

Print your PDF file at 11x17. Print the file: 04.01_FirstNameInitialLastName_TitleOfProject.pdf.

Part 1 is due March 22nd/24th.

Part II: Finding the Geometry

By this phase, you have completed the fundamentals steps that are required to continue with the next phase. What’s
important to note here is how you were able to manipulate the two basic geometry by using the developmental process
of altering the geometry; rotation, twisting, scaling, and/or stretching. Its time to take each geometry that you’ve altered
and radiate lines at least 3 of the 4 segments and extend them beyond the geometric shape. You will do this for all
geometries but establishing a set of rules that will guide you through the process. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Turn on the layer of one of your altered geometric shape/path you developed, making sure it is locked.

Step 2: Turn on the layer of one of your altered geometric shape/path you developed, making sure it is locked.

Step 3: Remember to change the line weight to 1 of 3 lines that you have exercised in previous assignments.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 1-3 for the other geometric shapes on all separate layers.

Step 5: Mapping geometries: When you’ve completed this step, turn on all of your new vector layers and lock them.
You are now going to analyze your work by examining the lines and look for similar geometries that will emerge. Estab-
lish a set of rules that will determine your geometric shape. Use no more than 3 colors for identification. Use gradient
color values from dark to light of that same color.

Part II: Finding the Geometry

1. For example, select a color first, then for every 4 point verticy you find, you will fill that shape with
that color at a set transparency. You will do this again for the next set but creating new shapes using
5 points, and so on

Step 6: Choose a color of expression to articulate certain geometric forms.

1. For example, for triangles (3 point), use one color, for squares (4 point) use another color and so
on.

Step 7: You should take the time to analyze the vector line work on a macro and micro scale. When you step back from
the work, you should be able to see more geometries appear that are larger than the one before, identify those with a
set color at a lighter transparency.

Step 8: Now this new composition you’ve created needs to be on its own 11x17 canvas and centered on the page.

Step 9: Use fonts; Myriad, Arial, or Microsoft San Serif, at the following sizes:
1. Place title of project either at the top/middle/bottom of page (what you perceive to be expressive
to the project). Use font size 48 (max).
2. Your identification will be placed at the LOWER RIGHT-HAND CORNER of your canvas as font
size 12.
