Understands what the minimum safe distance from equipment is
Understands the dangers and consequences of breaking the minimum safe distance threshold (Red
Man Area)
Is not authorized to be in the Red Man Area
Knows the hand & arm signals to stop work
Has the authority to stop unsafe work

Green Man Responsibilities


Stay out of Red Man areas
Warn others who may be in harm’s way
Stop unsafe work
Report unsafe behaviors
Notify person in charge of any hazards
Always wear proper PPE such as reflective vest when necessary
Never wear head phones
Only use mobile phones in approved locations

Consequences
All employees have a responsibility for their own safety
Violations of safety rules can result in termination of any employee
This includes Managers, Supervisors & Engineers

Who is a Red Man?


Someone who…
Can be authorized by the contractor to guide equipment operations
Can be a trained and tested equipment operator
Has been formally trained on proper equipment guidance techniques
Has been tested on his application of these techniques
Knows the capabilities and limitations of equipment
Can relay information & guide the equipment operator, uses hand & arm signals to relay information
& guidance
Knows what actions to take in the event of a hazardous situation
Knows the required hand & arm signals
Has the authority to stop unsafe work

Red Man Responsibilities


Stay clear of equipment blind spots
Stay away out of Dead man zones
Assist equipment operator in avoiding collisions
Guide equipment operator using hand & arm signals or other devices
Stop equipment or pedestrians immediately to avoid collisions or accidents
Report unsafe behaviors
Always maintain eye contact with operator
Never wear head phones
Only use mobile phones in approved locations
Operators need to stop operating if people come in to Redman or Dead man zones

Consequences
All employees have a responsibility for their own safety
Violations of safety rules can result in termination of any employee
This includes Managers, Supervisors & Engineers
