Conclusion

The document summarizes the process, learnings, and areas for improvement from a photography project. The photographer wanted to capture the essence of a familiar walk through photographs. They shot over 3 days and intentionally waited several weeks before editing to avoid bias. The main learning was how difficult it is to emulate film using digital photography. They realized limitations like a film camera's limited shots could improve focus. For future projects, the photographer would use a film camera and shoot over a longer period to allow more thought and variety in the photographs.

Conclusion

The process:

When beginning to shoot for this project, I went out every day for 3 days in a row shooting
the same walk that my parents took me on every week to visit my family. I wanted to
capture the essence of that journey in photographs because we often did the same while we
were growing up. To me, that walk is just as much a part of ‘home’ as my families’ house.

When shooting the photographs, I wanted to take shots that both resembled photographs
that I would’ve taken when I was growing up and photographs that I would take now with
all of the extra knowledge I have gained over the years and on this course.

After shooting the photographs, I intentionally left them unedited for two or three weeks
because I wanted to be as objective as possible over my photographs and could have been
biased towards a handful of them directly after shooting. I wanted to use the best possible
photographs, not the one’s I liked the most.

What I’ve learned:

The number one thing that I’ve learned over creating this project is that it’s hard to push
digital to look like film and that film is unique because of it’s colours and feel. I feel as if
that’s why film photography is still very popular today, even though it is less convenient and
more expensive in the long run.

Alternatively, I feel as if I learned how to edit a photo more productively without leaving too
much evidence it was edited in the first place. I feel this way because all of the photos in my
project were edited in some way or another but very few people pointed it out about the
first batch of photographs. However, when we get to the end of the project, with the darker
photographs, it’s easier to tell how it has been edited because of the colouring and the
dynamic range within the photographs.

What I would do better:

If I had a chance to shoot this project again from the start, I would use a 35mm film camera
or a Polaroid 600 series camera instead of using a digital camera. I don’t think the results are
as good as I was hoping for because it’s almost impossible to emulate film stocks and the
way their colours are formed. Additionally, I believe that it would have been useful to have a
limited amount of photographs you can take. With film photography, you can’t shoot
unlimited amounts of photographs like you can with a digital camera. I believe this
limitation would’ve allowed me to properly get into the moment and focus on composition
and subject matter in the heat of the moment.
Lastly, I would have liked to shoot the photographs over a series of weeks instead of
shooting it all in one weekend. I believe I would’ve had more time to think over the shots
that I wanted to take and how I would go about getting them. Additionally, I believe that it
would have allowed for a greater variety in photographs as a lot of the photographs within
my project look and feel the same because they were taken so closely together, in terms of
time frame and physical distance.

In the end, I believe that I have crafted a good project but I acknowledge the flaws within it.
