Thematic Unit Topic: The Ocean
Grade Level of Your Learners: 5th
Vocabulary Words Related to Topic: reef, continental shelf, island, salt water, plankton, algae Resources: National Geographic, YouTube, “StemWorks.” Academic Doman Description of Activity “Find The Lie!” activity asks students to read an article that has 5 lies about the ocean within it. It is the students’ job to find the lies and Reading/Literature respond with the truth based off of the text read and reviewed in class. This activity enforces critical reading skills. It also allows the students to review and solidify understanding about content about the ocean. Students will work in a group to create their own 2-minute news report based off of an interesting marine life video they found online. It could be for a marine animal or a geographical incident. This activity allows Writing students to practice formatted writing using a template. This activity also gives students the opportunity to research and discover exciting behaviors of different marine animals and ocean geography. Students will work in groups to experiment and log how much salt is needed to make an egg float. Students will learn about buoyancy and how to make a concentration similar to the ocean’s salt water. Science Students will measure with a scale how much salt is being added and will log how much was needed to make the egg float and compare to the actual salt concentration of the ocean. This activity uses scientific methods as well as knowledge about salt water. Each student will create an illustrated bar graph measuring the estimated amounts of 5 different marine animals found in the ocean. Math This activity helps children gain an understanding of visually comparing and contrasting numbers in math. It also allows children to discover the populations of different marine animals. Each group will be assigned one of the oceans to research and to find interesting facts for a surrounding nation and present them to the Social Studies class. This quick and fun activity allows students to research different cultures. It also allows them to learn more about the climate and other details pertaining to the 7 oceans. The class will listen to different ocean sounds and will reflect on the different emotions they feel during each of the sounds (waves on the shore, hurricane, whale noises, dolphin calls, etc.). This activity helps PE/Art/Music children practice listening and analyzing their brain’s responses while learning about the many sounds of the ocean. They could also color what mood they feel during the listening time. Periodically throughout the thematic unit, have Kahoot time with questions based off of what is being covered in lessons and vocabulary Technology words in order to informally assess student understanding. Students will work in groups with an assigned iPod/iPad to answer the questions. This activity assesses student understanding of the content and
