Academic Doman Description of Activity
“Find The Lie!” activity asks students to read an article that has 5 lies
about the ocean within it. It is the students’ job to find the lies and
Reading/Literature respond with the truth based off of the text read and reviewed in class.
This activity enforces critical reading skills. It also allows the students to
review and solidify understanding about content about the ocean.
Students will work in a group to create their own 2-minute news report
based off of an interesting marine life video they found online. It could
be for a marine animal or a geographical incident. This activity allows
Writing
students to practice formatted writing using a template. This activity
also gives students the opportunity to research and discover exciting
behaviors of different marine animals and ocean geography.
Students will work in groups to experiment and log how much salt is
needed to make an egg float. Students will learn about buoyancy and
how to make a concentration similar to the ocean’s salt water.
Science Students will measure with a scale how much salt is being added and
will log how much was needed to make the egg float and compare to
the actual salt concentration of the ocean. This activity uses scientific
methods as well as knowledge about salt water.
Each student will create an illustrated bar graph measuring the
estimated amounts of 5 different marine animals found in the ocean.
Math This activity helps children gain an understanding of visually comparing
and contrasting numbers in math. It also allows children to discover the
populations of different marine animals.
Each group will be assigned one of the oceans to research and to find
interesting facts for a surrounding nation and present them to the
Social Studies class. This quick and fun activity allows students to research different
cultures. It also allows them to learn more about the climate and other
details pertaining to the 7 oceans.
The class will listen to different ocean sounds and will reflect on the
different emotions they feel during each of the sounds (waves on the
shore, hurricane, whale noises, dolphin calls, etc.). This activity helps
PE/Art/Music
children practice listening and analyzing their brain’s responses while
learning about the many sounds of the ocean.
They could also color what mood they feel during the listening time.
Periodically throughout the thematic unit, have Kahoot time with
