Once the resources required have been obtained, one can then begin experimentation using the procedure

below.

1. Select three 60 ml Saybolt tubes for the experiment. Note: clean glassware with mineral spirits before use.
2. Ensure the 60 ml line is visible on all three flasks.
3. Place the three cleaned flasks below the Viscometer, aligning with the nozzle of the Viscometer.
4. Fill each graduated cylinder fully with the three designated oils (SAE 10, 20, 30).
5. Place the hydrometer into each graduated cylinder to measure the specific gravity of the three oil samples
record these values for each sample
6. Measure out 65 ml of each oil (SAE 10, 20, 30) in a clean measuring cup.
7. Cork the bottom of three of the Viscometer tanks. Transfer the 65 ml of oil to each tank. Note: keep track
of which tank holds which oil.
8. Turn on the unit using the front panel. Use the left-side switch to activate the light, and the right-side
switch to activate the heater.
9. Adjust the Viscometer heater until the target temperature is set to 35 °C, denoted by the green display.
10. Allow the Viscometer to reach the 35 °C temperature, denoted by the red display. Minor fluctuation is
acceptable.
11. Once at temperature, remove one cork and simultaneously begin the stopwatch. Repeat for the remaining
two tanks. Note: ensure the flask is centered allowing the oil to enter uninfluenced.
12. Carefully monitor the oil flow. Once the 60 ml line is reached stop the stopwatch then re-insert the cork
stopper. Follow the same procedure on the remaining two tanks.
13. Record the time required to fill each flask to 60 ml, record times shorter than 200s to the tenth of a
second, times greater than 200 seconds to round to the nearest whole second.
14. Replace the oil from the flasks to the respective Viscometer tanks. Add additional oil if the level has
decreased below the meniscus. Note: clean the used flasks with mineral spirits before returning them to the
Viscometer.
15. Adjust the target temperature to 50 °C allow the Viscometer to stabilize at this temperature.
16. Repeat steps 11-14 for the 50 °C samples.
17. Adjust the target temperature to 60 °C allow the Viscometer to stabilize at this temperature.
18. Repeat steps 11-14 for the 60 °C samples.
19. Drain residual oil and dispose of waste oil in designated container. Clean all glassware with mineral
spirits.
