Why study history?

Years, decades and centuries have passed reaching

up all the way to the year we are currently in, 2020.
In each passing time, a historical, momentous and
revolutionary event has happened which made our world,
our country the way it is today. Such as having
education and a subject about these historical events.
Why study history? Why is studying these important? Is
studying this subject worth it? Will the knowledge I
gain have value at present time? These are common
questions where everyone will have different reasons.
First, what is history? It is understood
differently by different people and is simply defined
as the study of the past events. To study history, one
must be interested in learning the past in order to
understand the importance and value of history. There
are several reasons as to why studying history is
important and has its own benefits where each
individual can have and use. Starting from helping
young people understand their own culture and how their
culture and country have evolved. It also gives us
knowledge about how things that we use every day got
invented and innovated such as the compass, paper,
electricity, gadgets and so much more. History has the
answers when we wonder about how any holidays such as
Philippines Independence Day, Rizal Day and National
Heroes Day came to be. Our grandparents used to tell
us stories about their experiences during their time
and studying history provides more details and possibly
more information in a chronological order. It makes us
aware of what they and other people are bringing up in
conversations related to politics specially when there
are persons in the past involved in present matters.
As a student, studying history can help me
improve many skills needed for other fields of life.
Especially since it requires us to acquire, utilize and
develop the ability to locate, study and interpret
written and visual material, in order to extract
evidence and meaning. It helps me understand what a
certain happening or event is, why it happened and how
a conflict or problem was solved. It creates thoughtful
and active citizens who are willing to participate in
political matters, process or in their own communities.
Several skills and knowledge learned in studying
history can be extremely useful in employment and in
the study of other subjects. History is factual and has
already happened, it is part of our identities. History
is the past, present and future. Every event that has
happened, currently happening and will happen is going
to be recorded as part of history. Such as this
pandemic which is changing our world, our country, is
going to be written down in history where we
experienced how late the governments’ response was and
how they thought so little of this virus. How those
governing authorities are pocketing the country’s funds
without feeling any guilt and without us getting the
justice we deserve for the actions they have made.
There are simply no words to describe what we are
experiencing. But these events will make us learn that
the most important thing about it is having the
opportunity to examine our own mistakes from the past
and present and learning from them in order to progress
and advance by not making the same mistakes which will
possibly create a better future for us and for the
future generations.
It is important to study history because it
teaches lessons about the past, present and future. It
develops our skills which makes us understand how to be
more human and who we are. History is where we look
back at our past and say “Let’s not do it again” and
“This time let’s be better”.
