Module 6 Activites

This document contains a student's answers to pre- and post-tests on writing chemical formulas. It includes a KWL chart where the student lists what they know, want to know, and learned about chemical formulas and names. The pre-test consists of sentence completion and identification questions. Figures of chemical and structural formulas are analyzed. The post-test involves writing the chemical formula of calcium iodide as an ionic compound. An activity requires students to write the chemical formula for a given name and identify if it is ionic or covalent.

PRE-TEST

A. Sentence Completion. Complete each statement with a word/ concept in the

blank of the item.

1. The chemical formula of carbon tetrahydride is _CH4_.

2. There is/are __3__ hydrogen atom/s present in this chemical formula
NH3.
3. The chemical name of NO3 is ___Nitrate___
4. Cl is the chemical symbol for ___Chlorine___
5. The structural formula of NO3 is
B. Identification. Write the chemical formula of the compound in each item
given its chemical name or vice-versa.
6. CO – Carbon monoxide
7. MgCl2 – Magnesium chloride
8. NO2 – Nitrogen dioxide
9. Nitrogen trichloride – NCl3
10. Calcium oxide – CaO

Analysis. Analyze the figures below then answer the corresponding guide
questions.

BF3
Figure A Figure B
Guide Questions
1. What are the two figure all about?

The two figures are about the chemical formula and structural formula of Boron
Triflouride.

2. What chemical symbols do you see in both figures?

B and F

3. How is figure A different from figure B?

The figure A is the structural formula and it is the graphic representation of

the molecular structure of a chemical compound while the figure B is the
chemical formula and it is a formula that gives the chemical proportions and the
number of atoms of an element in a particular substance or compound. A
chemical formula contains many symbols such as plus sign, minus sign, dashes,
a subscript to show the number of atoms of an element in a compound, and many
other. So a chemical formula is a formula that shows the exact elements and
atoms in a compound while a structural formula is the graphic representation of
the element or compound.

Assessment
(Critical Thinking)

POST-TEST

Problem Solving (10 pts.)

IONIC COMPOUND – Calcium iodide
Step 1 (Atoms involved) - Calcium and Iodine
Step 2 (Chemical symbol) - Ca + I
Step 3 (Formed Ion) - Ca+2 + I-1
Step 4 (Criss-cross multiply the charges) - Ca+2 + I-1
Step 5 (Remove the plus sign -1 +2
to determine the chemical formula) -
CaI2

Mini-Performance Task

Step 2 (Chemical symbol) - Mg + S

Step 3 (Formed Ion) - Mg+2 + S-2

Step 4 (Criss-cross multiply the charges) - Mg+2 + S-2

Step 5 (Remove the plus sign -2 +2
to determine the chemical formula) -
Mg2S2 or MgS

FORMAT FOR COVALENT COMPOUND

Step 1 (Atoms involved) -

Step 2 (Chemical symbol) -

Step 3 (Number of atoms) -

Step 4 (Combined the chemical

Symbol and number of atoms) -
Step 5 (Remove the plus sign
to determine the chemical formula) -

SET OF COMPOUNDS

Potassium fluoride Nitrogen dioxide Sodium bromide

Sulfur dioxide Magnesium sulfide

QUESTIONS
1. What is the chemical formula of the compound?
Mg2S2 or MgS

2. Is your chosen compound an ionic compound or covalent compound?

My chosen compound is an ionic compound, the results in the metal becoming

a positive ion and the group of non-metals a negative polyatomic ion. The two
opposite charges are attracted and form the ionic bond between ions in Magnesium
sulfide.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Added task to you.

Look for a product found at your home. Identify 1 chemical compound on its
label then determine its equivalent chemical formula as well as uses.

Revicon Forte a multivitamin contains the chemical compound Potassium Sulfate with
formula K2SO4 it is a white water-soluble solid and is widely used in fertilizers, the use
of Potassium Sulfate is preferred for some kinds of crops such as tobacco and some
fruits and vegetables. Potassium sulfate is also used in production of firearms as a
flash reducer in artillery propellant charges, it reduces muzzle flash, flareback and
blast overpressure. Another use of Potassium sulfate is in pyrotechnics in combination
with potassium nitrate to generate a purple flame
