The film begins with the exile of Jose Rizal in Dapitan province of Zamboanga.
This was because of his
opposition to religion and the Spanish government. He met Father Obach on his first day in Dapitan.
Here the priest forced him to repent but it failed because of his firm stand.
Upon his arrival in Dapitan, he found the town pathetic. He is promised that he would make changes
that would develop the town. Among his made is the placement of tubing made of bamboo, the
removes water to creeks to get rid of mosquitoes because it causes Malaria, incl also here is the
placement of lamps made of yours for the roads. Also fixed he built the town square with the help of his
Jesuit teacher Father Francisco Sanchez.
Dr. Jose Rizal was exiled in Dapitan from 1892-1896. These were his last four years. Dapitan served as his
prison cell. He always compared it to “a beautiful cage” where he is imprisoned. This was the longest
imprisonment Rizal ever had. He became so lost by those times, but still he did not lose his mind. Even
there, he continued studying and discovering things. He continued his conversation with his friends,
scientists and doctors outside the country. His life there was as peaceful as a simple man would wish: a
house near the shore with everything around you provided. Rizal is different, he would not wish for a
place where he will not be able to do anything for his country. Even in his exile state, he managed to
build a house, a clinic - where the poor and the rich are welcome, and a school where he had 16
students. In Dapitan, Rizal found the last woman of his life – Josephine Bracken. He wished to marry her,
but the church would not allow it because Rizal does not want to renounce his beliefs and everything
that he had said against the church.
Even in his exile, Rizal maintained a balance life. This is a call for every Filipino to be productive amidst
hardship and imprisonment. A call for everyone that life does not end as long as you live for other and
not for yourself.
Jose Rizal, a man with so many accomplishments. Jose Rizal gives all of us inspiration in all the things we
do. He is inspires us to be hardworking and diligent, which most of us are not.
I am amazed that even though Rizal was in exile, he didn't mind the fact that he was sent to
Dapitan to live like a prisoner and yet he still manages to accomplish many things. He has taught the
poor Mindanao folk to unite for trading so that they may become independent and free themselves
from the Chinese and thus become less exploited, in the sense that he organized a cooperative even in
exile. While many people would be in panic, despair or lose hope for any success in their lives because of
being exiled Jose Rizal continued to serve his country. This is what made Jose Rizal stand out of the
others as a hero to a nation. He was truly a man of action. He always put his countrymen first before
him.
He truly was a man of action, he did not only looked over the people nor just tell people what to
do, he helped them in their everyday work
Right now I wish that the tree he planted would somehow magically make Rizal appear in this
time of ours so that I can praise him for what he did for us.
Rizal truly was a person for his countrymen, he truly was a patriot and nationalistic for he never
wanted to see his fellow countrymen being oppressed and being exploited.
Dapitan became the bare witness in one of the most fruitful periods in Rizal’s life, from June 17, 1892 to
July 31, 1896. His stay in this province was more than just living in exile, for it was in this period when
Rizal had been intent on serving the people and the society through his civic works, medical practices,
land development, promotion of education and course, coming across with his one true love, Josephine
Bracken. This exile helped strengthen his nationalism, love for his family and for the people of Dapitan. It
was also in those moments where he suffered, being harassed and threatened by the Spaniards.
In the film, Rizal mostly seems content to live out a quiet existence in the province. The people in
Dapitan looked up to him, adored and respected him. The youth had the passion to follow him, learn
what he was willing to teach to them, and follow what he had to instruct. Rizal wins my admiration for
his skills in the medical field back in that primitive era with limited tools and medicines, providing free
medicine to his patients as most of them were underprivileged. His community projects, like the water
system and lighting system, were also a big help to the community. He became a farmer, a businessman,
a scientist and inventor in Dapitan. Everything was going well for Rizal for the most part, although there
were still those who sought to do him harm.
Things began to get complicated when a particular woman entered Rizal’s life, the woman being
Josephine Bracken, accompanying her blind, adopted father to seek medical assistance from Rizal. Rizal
and Bracken quickly hit it off, but Bracken’s father got in the way. The father and daughter went back to
Hong Kong, but after a while, Bracken came back to seek a relationship with Rizal. They then got married
in their own personal ceremony without the consent of the Church, consummating their marriage, and
Bracken soon became pregnant. Rizal’s sister Maria doesn’t trust Josephine, suspecting that she might
be another one of the Church’s agents. Rizal confronts Bracken about this, gets angry, and throws her to
the ground. Bracken bears a stillborn child, who Rizal tearfully buries on his grounds. It was in his
moments with Bracken that we could witness his weakened state, apart from his usually calm and
courageous behavior.
There are a couple of clever scenes here and there in the film, but for the most part, Rizal’s life in
Dapitan was pretty uneventful. The earlier parts find Rizal with little conflict to deal with, so there’s no
real hook to the narrative. Things got interesting when Bracken came into the picture, but even that
feels pretty weak. Rizal also comes off as a bit too perfect, able to accomplish anything he sets his mind
into and completely beloved by the people around him. The cast has some good performances, but
there were some bad ones also. Amanda Page’s delivery felt terribly off. Albert Martinez was fine
enough, although the character he played doesn’t have a lot of dimension. Much of Rizal’s life in Dapitan
and the details of Josephine Bracken’s life and intentions are still pretty murky, but there is a sense that
this movie really tried to get close to what actually happened, employing a pretty large team of
researchers and writers to make sure that they got things right, and for that alone, the movie probably
deserves admiration and respect.
The event on the film was a flashback of yesterday, on time were our country was under the Spanish
colonization. The highlights were on the life of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the moment when he
was being ferried to Dapitan in the province of Zamboanga. There are scenes showing brutalities that Dr.
Jose Rizal suffered from doing and trying to achieve his mission which is to liberate his beloved country,
Philippines. Upon putting him in that place under the supervision of the Spanish authorities Dr. Jose
Rizal have done a lot to develop and help that oppressed and uncivilized area to a much better place.
Even he was lonely for he was being astray from his own home he did good things to help his
countrymen. It has showed in that film that the priest were so against the deeds of Dr. Jose Rizal may it
be for the welfare of the villagers. At present times person who is concerned about the education of the
youths are praised and regarded as heroes or a gift from God, but during the time of Rizal when he had
free classes offering education to the very unfortunate sectors of children the church showed that they
were against. The church in person of the friars persuaded people especially the parents to stop sending
their children in school where Dr. Jose Rizal was the teacher, for they have treated Rizal as a traitor and
was excommunicated from church.
It must be noticed in that film that what the friars does in his sermon was to attack what Rizal is doing,
when infact those activities of Dr. Jose Rizal were all for the benefits of the people living in Dapitan. It
must be also noticed that in that film there were scenes were the Spanish government tried to do
assassination to Dr. Jose Rizal whom they treated as a criminal. But the plan didn’t work for Rizal have
defended himself against the assassin, just like how Dr. Jose Rizal have defended his country against the
wrong doings of the Spanish Government in hand with some disobedient friars whom only think for
their own good.
It was believed that Josephine Bracken was a spy who works for the Spanish government and sees the
friars. But have fallen in love to Dr. Jose Rizal and married each other without the blessing from the
church. For Josephine Bracken have seen the goodness in heart of Rizal to help is oppressed people and
to free his beloved land, Josephine cane to love Rizal.
In that film, if it was true that Josephine was a spy then it only proves that Dr. Jose Rizal was a man of
goodness. For he made Josephine fall for him and marry him. Dr. Jose Rizal was a hero who came to be a
victim of injustices and immoralities that the colonization has brought to our country, Philippines. The
film ended in the scene where Rizal was leaving the place he came to love and had a lot of memories
that were good and bad.
It was a very heart breaking scene was Rizal was buried in an improper place and not into a cemetery
where he deserved to be. His mother has cried a lot begging from those Spaniards to tell to her the
place where his favorite son was buried, injustice. It just reflects the true colors of the Country, Spain at
that time to colonize Philippines and became a slave, to work for the mother country Spain. Because of
what happened to Rizal a lot of Filipino have wakened their minds to see the inequalities that were truly
happening at old times.
Now a day, Dr. Jose Rizal was an image of inspiration in every heart of Filipino to be nationalistic and
learn to love in blood their own birth country. To help people out of your status in life, to see how
important Education is on how to properly guide the youth to become the leaders of the future
generation. Dr. Jose Rizal have inculcate to our minds to continue good deeds for the betterment of our
country, Philippines.
