Introduction
The task of Computer System is about Windows installation, device drivers error checking and
recovering, Linux installation, application installation on windows and Linux and fault on PC and
prevention. I have explained every terms in detailed manner.

Task 1 – Windows Installation

1. Installation of Windows
1. Identification of key stages in the installation.
Here, the most important point during the installation of windows are shown. Two main
component are used here. They are Oracle VM Virtual Box and Windows 10 pro 64-
bit Edition. “Virtual Box is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for
enterprise as well as home use. Not only is Virtual Box an extremely feature rich, high
performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution
that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General
Public License (GPL) version 2.” (Virtualbox.org, 2017)
Following are the procedure taken for the installment of Windows 10 pro:
I. So, I turned on the computer with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit DVD inserted into
Optical drive. After that, I pressed enter key when I was asked to and it took me
immediately into the Time, Language and input setting for the Windows. Here,
I entered my time zone, language and input method.

II. After pressing “Next”, a new window popped up telling me to install pc now or
repair. And I clicked to “Install Now”.

III. Here, I selected Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit and to the “Next”.

IV. Now, comes the license agreement, I read terms and condition to us Windows
and I clicked “Next”.

V. For type of Windows installation type. I went with custom(advanced)

VI. Next step is, I chose the drive and for the partition of the drive I click on new in
the advanced menu and I made a new primary drive of around 50.4-gb. Similarly,
I made 2 another drive of closely around 50-gb.

VII. Ultimately, the Windows installation began.

VIII. Now, I was asked to submit user name, password and hint. I provided them.

IX. And Windows 10 setup completes.

2. Identification and description of required device drivers and their source

locations.
After the installation of Windows, Device drivers are required to be installed to use the
hardware resources of the PC. Normally, they are preinstalled by the windows. They are
installed inside the System32 folder in the Windows directory of the system drive. In my
case C drive is my system drive. So, the source address is C:\Windows\System32
Here are the explation of some device drivers required for windows
I. Network Driver: Network driver helps to connect windows with the Network
interface card of the PC. They are normally preinstalled with windows.
Sometimes, we need to provide wifi driver manually by downloading from
manufacturer’s website and installing.

II. Graphics driver: Graphics card are utilized by PC with the help of graphics
driver. Normally, they are not installed with windows. So, we need identify which
card we have AMD or NVIDIA and model name. Now, we can download from the
website of mufacturer’s and install.

III. Sound driver: For sound, windows comes with average sound quality. But if you
got really high end speaker, you want to install driver from their respective
manufaturer’s website.

IV. Mice and other pointing device driver: This driver gives OS access to utilize
any mouse or pointing device . This driver is normally preinstalled with Windows.

3. Identification and description of unresolved issues – especially missing device

drivers.
I got an issue for the missing driver. The screenshot is shown below:

So, this problem occurs when there is missing network driver. As you can see in the
screen shot the yellow sign indicates that there is an issue in the network adaptor. For
this, I simply went to the manufacturer’s website and downloaded the Network adapter
for my PC. And that yellow sign was gone.

2. Installation of antivirus software

1. Identification of product used.
For antivirus, I went with 360 Total Security version 9.0.0.1146.
“360 Total Security Essential is equipped with 5 antivirus engines and multiple layers for
real-time protection. Use Sandbox feature to isolate risky programs from your PC.” (360
Total Security, 2017)
It doesn’t cost any charges to install this antivirus. But it provides quality security
features and its very user friendly and minimal space taken in hard drive.

2. Identification and description of key stages in installation.

The steps taken for the installation of the 360 total security are mentioned below:

I. Run the setup file of 360 Total Security by double right clicking on it and click
“yes”.
II. And hit the “Install” button on the new pop up screen.

III. Now, start the 360 Total Security.

IV. After that, we get to the home screen of the 360 total security.

3. Identification and description of problems and unresolved issues.

I didn’t get any trouble installing 360 total Security. But there can be some problems
while installing antivirus.
Some of the issues that can happen while installing antivirus are:
I. Sometimes the setup file for the antivirus may be online installer and computer
may not be connected to the internet.
Solution: either download offline installer or connect PC to the internet
connection.
II. If another antivirus is already installed, 360 total security may not be installed
properly.
Solution: Uninstall previous antivirus.

4. Outline of the update process for the antivirus software.

For the update procedure of the 360 Total Security. There are two main methods.
They are:
I. Automatic Process: This can be done from within the application itself. Just go
the main menu tab in the top right corner of the screen of antivirus. Click on the
check for update. Now program will itself check for update and if there is any
update it will update itself.

II. Manual Update: for the manual update, we need to go to antivirus’s official
website and download the latest version of the antivirus from there. (360 Total
Security, 2017)

3. Installation of office software

1. Identification of product used.
The office software used is WPS Office 2016 v10.1.0.5795. WPS office is “Your dream
solution for a low-budget, no-commitment,
free productivity office suite. The smallest size office suite consisting of Writer,
Presentation, and Spreadsheets,
plus, PDF tools to fulfill all of your document needs.” (Wps.com, 2017)

2. Identification and description of key stages in installation.

The steps taken for installing WPS Office are:
I. Double click the offline installer file for WPS Office.
II. Now, click on install now.

III. After that, Home screen for WPS Office pops up and we can start using WPS
Office.

3. Identification and description of problems and unresolved issues.

I didn’t have any problems installing WPS office. However, sometimes there can be
some issued while installing the WPS Office 2016. So here are some possible issues
with solutions:
I. If the bit of WPS Office 2016 installer does matches with windows bit, installer
won’t run.
Solution: So, correct bits of WPS Office should be installed with correct windows
version.
II. If the installer for WPS Office is online one and PC is not connected to internet,
the setup won’t run.
Solution: Make sure PC is connected to internet or make sure Network card is
installed properly.
III. If there is not enough space in the internal hard drive, the setup file won’t run.
Solution: Keep your drive space free and viruses free.

4. Installation of free utility

1. Identification of utility, outline of what it does and reason why you chose this
(make it different from that of your classmates).
So, for the free utility driver I went with FileZilla v 3.25.1. FileZilla is a free software.
“FileZilla Client is a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots
of useful features and an intuitive graphical user interface.” ("FileZilla - Client Features")
Features of FileZilla are:
“Easy to use, Supports FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol
(SFTP), Cross-platform. Runs on Windows, Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X and more, IPv6
support, Available in many languages, supports resume and transfer of large files >4GB,
Tabbed user interface, Powerful Site Manager and transfer queue, Bookmarks, Drag &
drop support, Configurable transfer speed limits, Filename filters, Directory comparison,
Network configuration wizard, Remote file editing, Keep-alive, HTTP/1.1, SOCKS5 and
FTP-Proxy support, Logging to file, Synchronized directory browsing, Remote file
search” ("FileZilla - Client Features")

2. Identification and description of key stages in installation.

Following are the steps taken for the installation of FileZilla:
I. Open the setup file and we are taken to license agreement option. Click on I
agree.

II. Now, comes optional offer whether to install Web Companion Pro or not. Right
now, I chose not to install and I clicked on the next.

III. For installation option, I went with default option.

VI. Finally, we are on the home screen of FileZilla application.

3. Identification and description of problems and unresolved issues.

For installing FileZilla also, I didn’t have any problem. Some problems that can happen
while installing FileZilla are:
I. Corrupted or infected setup file for FileZilla leads to issues while installing.
Solution: Download FileZilla from its own trusted website.
II. So many programs are running in the background while installing FileZilla.
Sometimes, it can mess up with the installation procedure.
Solution: make sure nothing is running for the clean installment of FileZilla.
III. If setup is for win 7 and system is Windows 10, installation may fail.
Solution: Download correct version of FileZilla.

Task 2 – Linux Installation

Linux is another operating system other than Windows OS and Mac OS. It’s an
open
Source software. It is based on UNIX.

1. Installation of Linux
1. Identification of distribution.
For the installation of distribution, I have chosen linuxmint-18-cinnamon-32bit.
It’s very optimized software as it does not require much power to run smoothly.
It’s some details are:

 “It works out of the box, with full multimedia support and is extremely easy
to use.

 It's both free of cost and open source.

 It's community-driven. Users are encouraged to send feedback to the

project so that their ideas can be used to improve Linux Mint.

 Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and

one of the best software managers.

 It's safe and reliable. Thanks to a conservative approach to software

updates, a unique Update Manager and the robustness of its Linux
architecture, Linux Mint requires very little maintenance (no regressions,
no antivirus, no anti-spyware...etc.).”

2. Description of disk partitioning (e.g. partition options, partition size).

 /swap=8192 MB
 / = 15286.9
 /boot = 7643

 /tmp = 3055

 /opt = 7642 MB
 /usr/local = 7642
In the beginning the size of the 150 GB was available. Now, it has been
partion all space as shown below.

3. Identification and description of required device drivers and their

source locations.
After the installation of Linux mint, driver that are installed or not are shown by
typing “lsmod” in the terminal. It is shown below:

4. Description of setting up administrator and standard user.

I have created user leon standard as shown below. It was done by typing “sudo
su” and then typing “adduser leon”. Some question were asked such as new unix
password, full name,etc. I filled those.

For the administrator just type “sudo usermod -aG sudo leon” in the terminal.

5. Description of network set-up.

For the network set-up, I went to system setting. And then network setting and
network properties. After that ipv4 setting and address was set to manual.

6. Identification and description of installation process for one

application.
For installation I went with thunderbird. For this I followed the steps from (Saive
and Posts, 2017)

Task 3 – Faulty PCs

Scenario 1: No sound output while playing music.

1. Identification of fault:
Driver for the installed speaker in the PC was not installed.
2. Causes of fault:
Here are some points to justify above statement:
 Not compatible driver for the Windows version, PC hardware version or speaker
version.
 Driver version on updated
3. Remedy of fault
Steps for remedy of the problem is shown below:
 The plug from the speaker should be properly plugged in the PC’s socket.
 Run troubleshoot option.
 Make sure speaker is in fine condition to play.
 Download the latest driver and firmware for the speaker from its manufacture’s
website.
4. Success/Failed report: No error occurred while solving this issue. Sound problem was
fixed.

Scenario 2: Can’t play latest games

1. Identification of fault:
Driver for the installed graphics card was not installed.
2. Causes of fault:
 Driver was not updated to latest version.

 Driver could not be installed as PC hardware was outdated with the version of
driver or vice-versa
3. Remedy of fault:
 Download the latest driver from graphics card manufacturer’s website and install
it.
 If there is outdated part in PC hardware, update it with new part.
 Diagnose using trouble shoot option.
 Make sure graphics is properly connected and working.
4. Success/Failure report: No error found. Problem for graphics card was fixed.

Scenario 3: PC frequently freezes or brings up blue screen of death

1. Identification of fault:
 PC randomly restarts and freezes in the middle of something.
 Blue screen with some text flashes while booting up PC.
 Performance decreases after extended period of PC uses.
2. Causes of fault:
 RAM in the PC is dead.
 Ram is covered in dust.
 Excessive heat in the PC can cause Ram to wear out.
 Power surge can damage Ram.
3. Remedy of fault:
 Diagnosing the problem
 Fixing by removing Ram and cleaning it then put in back on
 Updating Ram to new model
4. Success/Failure report:
Problems was successfully fixed.

Scenario 4: Computer starts but Screen remains Blank.

1. Identification of the problem:
 Monitor of the PC is dead.
2. Causes of the fault:
 Monitor may be dead.
3. Remedy to fault:
 Performing a hard reset
 Resetting BIOS netbook.
 Resetting memory module
4. Success/failure report: No error found. Fault was successfully removed.

Scenario 5: Computer is slow.

1. Identification of problem:
 Takes more time launching programs
 Freezes frequently while switching between programs
 Every task is slow while execution.

• PC is attacked by malware.
• Processor, Ram, hard drive is outdated
• Too many junks in the PC
3. Remedy to fault:
 Performing full anti-virus scan
 Updating Ram, processor, hard drive to SSD
 Deleting junks
4. Success/failure report: No error.
