Hajj

Meaning and importance

The Nobel Quran says:
"Pilgrimage there to is the duty man owes to Allah ,those who can afford the
journey...."(al Quran 3:97)
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, made obligatory upon muslims in the 9th A.H . For  the
past 14 centuries countless muslims men and women, from all corners of the world
have made the annual pilgrimage to Makkah , the birth place of Islam. Hajj is performed
in the Islamic month Zil Hajj , the last month of the Islamic calender. It is obligatory upon
every Muslim male and female ,who can afford to perform it,  once in a lifetime. The
Holy Quran says:
"And complete the hajj and umrah in the service of God".
(2:196)
Hajj is the largest annually occurring pilgrimage in the world in which people put on
Same clothing, having similar objective and similar religious thoughts. Muslims trace the
recorded origins of the divinely prescribed pilgrimage to prophet Ibrahim (a.s).
According to the Quran , it was prophet Ibrahim who together with his son prophet
Ismail built the Kabbah the house of Allah . The virtues of Hajj are emphasized in both
the Quran and the hadith of Prophet Mohammed (saw).  It's main objective is to purify
the soul from sins in order to qualify for Allah's mercy in the hereafter.  The Prophet
(s.a.w) has said :
"A hajj that which is free from sins and defects is rewarded with paradise."
A sea of pilgrims ascend upon Islam's holiest city, Makkah with the objective to seek
the pleasure of their Lord the following hadith of the Prophet Mohammed (saw) is
evident of the importance of Hajj. He said
"Who so ever posses possessions and convance for the journey to the house of Allah
but inspite of this does not perform hajj then his dying or dying of a jew and a Christian
is same .
According to one tradition of the Prophet (saw) , Hajj is the jihad for the old weak and
women. In another hadith the Prophet (saw) has called pilgrims "The Guests of Allah" .
Among all the acts of worship,  Hajj is the only pillar for which a complete Surah (surah
e hajj) is revealed. Hajj is a demonstration of the universality of Islam, and the
brotherhood of muslims . It is also a reminder of the fact that Makkah alone in the whole
world was honoured by Allah for being the , centre of monotheism and that  it will
continue to be the centre of Islam.

B.Explain different kinds of Hajj mentioning the most popular kind performed by pilgrims
from other countries.

There are three different types of Hajj,  performed by the pilgrims. Hajj e Qiran or the
combined hajj during which the pilgrim enters into Ahram for both umrah and Hajj and
sacrifice of animal is optional in this time.
Hajj e Ifrad is which in a pilgrim enters into Ahram only for the performance of Hajj
sacrifice is optional in this as well.
The most popular is called hajj e Tamattu or the interrupted hajj, during which a pilgrims
enters into Ahram to perform Umrah before Hajj sacrifice is compulsory in this type of
Hajj.

Method of Hajj

The Noble Quran says:

“Pilgrimage to the the House of Allah is a duty man owes to Allah----“

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. It is a pilgrimage to Makkah and Arafat. The meaning of
the Hajj is intention while in Shariah, the meaning of the Hajj is going to visit the house
of ALLAH, Kaaba and performing the obligatory actions during the days specific to Hajj.
These days are from the 8th of the Zul Hajj to the 13th of the Zul Hajj. The rituals of Hajj
are called manasik e Hajj.

On the 8th of Zilhajj soon after the observing the morning prayers, all pilgrims must head
to Mina (a town in Makkaa), where they stay an entire day carrying out ritual prayers –
Duhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, Fajr and Qasr – as stated in the Quran.

On the second day of Hajj (ninth day of Dul Hijjah), pilgrims travel to nearby Mount
Arafat. Pilgrims complete Dhuhr (noon prayer) and Asr (afternoon prayer), Zuhr and asr
are shortened and offered combined, pilgrims listen to hajj sermon and stay there
supplicating the Almighty and asking Him for forgiveness and mercy until the sun sets. It
was narrated that the Prophet said: “Hajj is Arafa.” It is the day of Dua’a (supplication)
and Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), on which Allah prides His Angels on His pilgrims and
forgive them. The Prophet is reported to have said:

“When the day of Arafa comes, Allah descends to the heavens and prides the
angels on His servants. He says: ‘Look at my servants; they came to Me from
every valley, unwashed and uncombed. Be witness that I have forgiven thee.”

After sunset without offering Maghrib prayer , pilgrims head to Muzadalifah (a town
between Mina and Mt. Arafat) to observe the evening prayers and rest the night until
Fajr prayers in preparation for the next day’s ritual of stoning the devil. Pilgrims pick up
49 pebbles of similar size for Rami.

On the 10th day Dhu al-Hijjah after performing Rami of the Jamr al Aqba ,pilgrims
perform sacrifice and then Hal’q or Qasr ,(Shaving of Head or shortening of hair)
pilgrims leave for Makkah before sunset to do Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’iy

On the 11th and 12th days of Hajj, pilgrims must complete the stoning of the Devil or
Rami. Before Sunrise, pilgrims head back to Mina and participate in a ritual known as
‘Stoning the devil’. Seven pebbles (of similar sizes) are thrown at a stone structure
known as Jamrat al-Aqabah. This is an act carried out at noon on each day. All pilgrims
are required to leave for Makkah before sunset on the 12th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.

The next and the final step is the farewell Tawaf, circumambulating the Kaaba anti-
clockwise seven times and touching or kissing the Kaaba if possible. Pilgrims reflect on
their experience and thank Allah for everything, while circumambulating the Kaaba.
On completing the Tawaf, pilgrims can proceed to collect their belongings, leave Kaaba
by setting their left foot out first and making supplications while doing so. This final step
marks the end of Hajj rituals. After wards pilgrims may make their visit to Madina
according to their schedule ,though it is not part of Hajj but as a mark of respect to the
Prophet Muhammad and to seek his blessings ,every pilgrim visits Madina.
Significance of the Rituals of Hajj:

The journey of Hajj is an important one. Millions of Muslims visit Makkah each year
from all over the world to fulfill this pillar of Islam. The five day excursion of Hajj brings a
sense of unity in all Muslims; regardless of age, status and nationality, pilgrims wear
their simple Ihram and perform the rituals of Hajj. The following are the rituals and the
significance behind them: Men wear two seamless white cloths to cover themselves,
whereas women dress more modestly and cover everything except the face and hands.
AThe rites of Hajj commemorate the life of the Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon him).
The rituals of Hajj and Umrah reflect the significant times in the Prophet Ibrahim’s
life.after ablution, two rakahs of Niyah (intention) are performed.

The significance of the Ihram is to show equality in front of Allah The Almighty. The
circumambulation of the Ka’ba is done seven times. The prophet Ibrahim built the Ka’ba
with his son Ismail (May peace be upon them both). Allah the Almighty commanded the
Prophet to take his son Ismail and wife Hagar to Makkah which was situated in a valley
then called Bekka. The city of Makkah did not exist at the time. In fact, it was an arid
and dry land. The prophet left his wife and son who complied due to their strong faith in
Allah the Almighty. Soon they had no water left, and Ismail began crying out of thirst
and hunger. Hagar ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa frantically searching for
water, until the spring of Zamzam miraculously sprang forth from under Ismail’s feet.
The ritual of Sa’yee replicates Hagar’s search for waterPilgrims spend a day at Mina
where they perform the Zuhr, Asr, Maghreb, and Isha prayers before leaving for Arafat.
The day spent at Mina is a way to get closer to Allah through prayers and
remembrance.
The day of Ararfah is a day of great reflection, a way to feel unity with Muslims from
around the world and remove racism. It’s the day of ‘wuquf’ – standing before God. in
Arafat the pilgrims pray until dusk. It the site where the Prophet Muhammad (May peace
and blessings be upon him) gave his last sermon. During this day the pilgrims listen to
sermons delivered by Islamic scholars from Jabal Al Rahmah (The Mount of Mercy).

After sunset of 9th zilhajj pilgrims proceed to Muzdalifah. It’s situated between Mina and
Arafat. The pilgrims jointly pray Maghrib and Isha here and collect pebbles for the
Stoning of the Devil for the next day. During the Ramy al-Jamarat(10th—12th Zilhhaj)
The pilgrims throw seven stones at the largest of the three pillars known as Jamrat al-
Aqabah. The three pillars represent the three times that Satan attempted to tempt
prophet Ibrahim (May peace be upon him).
Eid Al-Adha is celebrated from 10th –12th of zilhaj,it is the day the day which
remembers Prophet Ibrahim’s great sacrifice. Millions of muslims all over the world
sacrifice sheep as a reminder of the Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience when Allah the
Almighty asked him to sacrifice his son Ismail. This act of submission was intervened
when Allah allowed a lamb to be sacrificed instead of Ismail. Eid-Al Adha is celebrated
for three days and the meat of the sacrifice is divided into three parts, two of which go to
relatives and the poor. Regardless of whether one go for Hajj it’s important to reflect
and pray during this important time of pilgrimage. Hajj shows us that we are equal in the
eyes of Allah .

Important places
Kaabah is the holiest place for Muslims around the World in Makkaa, Saudi Arabia t.[2] It
‫هَّٰلل‬
is considered by Muslims to be the Bayt Allah (Arabic:  ‫ َبيْت ٱ‬, lit. 'House of God') and is
the qibla (Arabic: ‫قِ ْبلَة‬, direction of prayer) for Muslims around the world when
performing salah.
The Kaaba is believed by Muslims to have been rebuilt several times throughout history,
according to the traditions it was first built by Prophet Adam with the help of Angels .it
was damaged during the floods of prophet Noah ,according to the holy Quran it was
rebuilt by Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael), when he returned to the
valley of Makkah several years after leaving his wife Hajar (Hagar) and Ismail there
upon Allah's command. Circling the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise, known as
Tawaf (Arabic: ‫طواف‬, romanized: tawaaf), is an obligatory rite for the completion of
the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.[2] The area around the Kaaba on which pilgrims
circumambulate is called the Mataaf. In one corner of it the Black stone or Hajre Aswad
is fixed ,which is believed to be brought from Heaven. Touching and kissing it is act
considered of great reward
The Kaaba and the Mataaf are surrounded by pilgrims every day of the Islamic year,
except the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, known as the Day of Arafah, on which the cloth covering
the structure, known as the Kiswah  is changed. However, the most significant increase
in their numbers is during Ramadan and the hajj, when millions of pilgrims gather
for tawaf.[3] .Accoding to one tradion all prayers are answered upon the first glance at
Kaabah till a pilgrim blinks his eye.According to one more tradition even looking at the
Kaabah is an act of worship. An amazing geographical fact about Kaabah is that it is the
center of the Earth ,no plane has ever flew upon Kaabah.

Arafat.

Jabal Arafat (Arabic: ‫)جبل عرفات‬ is a small, granite mountain in the plain of Arafat,
about 20km from the Ka’bah. The mountain is also known as Jabal al-Rahmah,
meaning “Mountain of Mercy”
The common meaning of the word Arafat is ‘to know’. After being taken out of
Jannah and placed on Earth, it was at Jabal Arafat that Prophet Adam (‫)عليه السالم‬
and Hawa (‫ )عليها السالم‬met up again. Acco0rding to one tradition Allah will hold
His court on the Judgement day on this very plain.it was on this plain where the
Prophet Muhammad SAW received the last revelationof the Holy Quran about
the completion of religion during his farewell pilgrimage.(5:3)

Standing on Arafat is an essential part of the Hajj; whoever misses the standing on
Arafat has missed Hajj, because the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: “Hajj is
Arafat.” [al-Hakim]

The day of Arafat has many virtues, as was narrated in many Ahadith. Aisha (
‫)رضي هللا عنها‬  narrated that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: “There is no day in
which Allah sets free more souls from the fire of hell than on the day of
Arafat. And on that day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of
exhibiting His Pride remarks to the angels, ‘What is the desire of these
(servants of mine)?'” [Muslim]

In another Hadith the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: “Apart from the day of the

Battle of Badr there is no day on which the Shaitan is seen to be more
humiliated, more rejected, more depressed and more infuriated, than on
the day of Arafat, and indeed all this is only because of beholding the
abundance of descending mercy (on the day) and Allah’s forgiveness of
the great sins of the servants.“ [Mishkat]

Jabal Arafat is a special place of Du’a (supplication). The virtue of this place is in
asking from Allah (‫ )ﷻ‬and the response is promised. Our beloved Prophet (
‫ )ﷺ‬and Prophet Ebrahim (‫ )عليه السالم‬made Du’a at this very spot.

The pilgrims heart should filled with nothing but neediness; which is presented in
heartfelt Du’as. What better day to ask and we are the only losers if we don’t take
a share of the promised response from the Almighty

Mina

It is located just seven kilometers in an eastern direction of the Masjid ul Haram

in Makkah. When it comes to famous Islamic landmarks, the renowned area of
Mina is never emphasized enough.. This destination is specially called out during
the Hajj time.
It is where pilgrims spend the night on 8th, 11th, and 12th and in some cases the
13th of Zul Hijjah. Mina possesses the Jamarat while is an important symbol for
the stoning ritual. Three hard stone pillars are struck by pilgrims as a part of the
Hajj ritual of stoning the devil.
From the facts being mentioned above, it is evident that the significance of Mina
during the Hajj cannot be denied.
There are a certain number of religious practices that must be performed during
the Hajj. After Hajj pilgrims embark upon their tawaf, they are instructed to return
to Mina. Most pilgrims travel via foot or buses to this religious destination. The
entire day and night are spent in tents laid out for their convenience. This is
commonly referred to as Layali al Tashriq.

Method of Umrah

After wearing ahram which is the primary requirement for umrah and hajj pilgrims recite
talbiya . upon reaching the mosque of kaabah one should perform tawaf which means
moving around kaabah seven times anti clock wise with respect and devotion . the
pilgrims must walk keeping kaabah on their left . upon arriving at the kaabah recitation
of tarbiah is stopped and tawaf is to be started at the point where hajr-e-aswad or the
black stone is fixed . after the completion of tawaf pilgrims proceed to maqaam-e-
ibrahim where they will offer two rakaa of nafal prayer . the pilgrims will then go to
zamzam which is situated in the basement of the masjid to drink the water while
standing and saying bismillah .

After drinking zamzam sai is performed which is to run\walk back and forth seven times
between the hills of safa and marwa which are siuated to the north and south of kaabah
upon reaching mount safa the following aayat is recited :

“verily as safa and marwa are from the symbols of Allah . So it is not a sin on him
who performs hajj and umrah of the house to perform the going between them
….. “ (2:158)

After sai male pilgrims will get their heads completely shaved or shorthnig of hair ,
females will click their hair equal to a length of a finger tip . after this all rules of ihram
are lifted and umrah is completed .

Though many rituals of umrah and hajj are same , both are Islamic piligramges , but the
main difference is their level of importance and the method of observance . hajj is one of
the five pillars of islam it is applicable on every muslim who is mently , physically and
financily capable to perform it , once in his life . whereas , umrah is a lesser piligramge
and not obligatory . hajj is performed once in a year on a prescribed date , whereas
umrah can be performed at any time and in any month of the Islamic year except the
hajj days (8-13 zill hajj ) . hajj has three types including qiran , ifraad , tamattu whereas
umrah has two types , umrah-tul-tamattu and umrah-tul-mufradah . umrah-tul-tamattu is
performed collectively with hajj , whereas , imrah-tul-mafradah is performed
independently .
There is no waquf-e-mina , Arafat and waquf-e-muzdallifah in umrah whereas all these
are the compulsory components of hajj.

What is meant by meeqat ?

Meeqat is the principal boundary at which muslim pilgrims must be wearing ihram
whether intending for hajj or umrah.

It is different for the pilgrims coming from different directions according to sahi bukhari
the prophet (S.A.W) mentioned four points of meeqat, dhul-hulayfah is the meeqat for
the people of madinah , al-juhfah for the people of sham or syria , qaran-al-manazil for
the people of najd and yalamlam for the people of yeman an additional meeqat was
fixed during the reign of second khalif umar-bin-khatab after the capture of basra and
kufa . he fixed dath irq as their meeqat .

The Arabic word HIL refers to the area between the boundries of meeqat and the
boundries of the HARAM. Towns and cities such as Jeddah , khulais , al-janun and
taneem are all situated within the hill area . pilgrims residing in or traveling through the
hill must enter into a state of ihram before crossing the boundry of haram . presently
masjid-e-ayesha , also known as masjid-e-taneem , located at about 8km from the
kaabah and 5km away from makkah , in the direction of madinah is considered as the
boundry of haram to be in ihram .

Tawaf

Tawaf is circumambulating the Holy Ka’abah seven times, which starts from Hajr-e-
Aswad (the black stone around one corner of Ka’abah) in a counter clockwise direction.
Each circumambulation gets to completion when a person returns back to Hajr-e-
Aswad. If possible, a person should approach to touch or kiss Hajr-e-Aswad, if not, he
can just point towards it with his right hand.

After completing the circumambulation seven times, a person should continue to move
in a counter clockwise direction till he reaches to his exit point.

There are seven types of Tawaf ,Tawaf-ul-Qudoom: is performed when a person arrived
at Makkah whether for Hajj, Umrah, Business or a visit. It is also called a welcome
Tawaf. It is sunnah for Aafaaqi (who lives outside Makkah) who performs Hajj Ifraad or
hajj Qiraan and it is not a Sunnah for those who are performing Hajj Tammatu or Umrah
even if they are an Aafaqi.Aisha said, “The first thing the Prophet ( ‫ )ﷺ‬did on reaching
Mecca, was the ablution and then he performed Tawaf of the Ka`ba and that was not
`Umra (alone), (but Hajj-al-Qiran.
Tawaf-ul-Ziarah is also called Tawaf-ul-Rukn or Tawaf-ul-Hajj. It is performed by all
pilgrims who are undertaking the Hajj. This Tawaf is mandatory. Hajj would be invalid, if
it is not performed. It can be performed from the dawn of 10 th Zil haj to 12th Zil haj.

Tawaf-ul-Wada (Tawaf-e-Sadr): is a farewell Tawaf and performed as a final ritual of

Hajj when a pilgrim leaving Makkah. It is wajib. Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Let none of
you leave Makkah before making a Tawaf around the Ka’abah, as the last of Hajj rites”

Tawaf-ul-Nafl is an optional tawaf but it is better than performing a nafl salaat. It can be
performed at any time and as desired. Perform Tawaf as much as you can, when you
are in Makkah because this privilege cannot be gained anywhere in the world.

Tawaf-ul-Umrah is a part of Umrah and performed as a ritual of Umrah. It is obligatory

for the one who performs Umrah.

Tawaf-ul-Nazr: is done If a person pledged that he will perform Tawaf if his desire is
fulfilled by Allah. Then, he must have to perform this Tawaf if Allah fulfills that desire.

Tawaf-ul-TahiyaahI is performed when a person enters in Haram. Tawaf-ul-Tahiyaah is

Mustahib.

After Tawaf, the person has to offer two units behind Maqam-e-Ibrahim (if possible,
otherwise they may offer that two units prayer anywhere in the mosque).

After sai male pilgrims will get their heads completely shaved or shorthnig of hair ,
females will click their hair equal to a length of a finger tip . after this all rules of ihram
are lifted and umrah is completed .

Difference between Hajj and Umrah

Umrah is reffered in the Holy Quran as “the Lesser Pilgrimage”.Though many rituals
of umrah and hajj are same , both are Islamic piligramges , but the main difference is
their level of importance and the method of observance . hajj is one of the five pillars of
Islam it is applicable on every Muslim who is mentally , physically and financially
capable to perform it , once in his life . whereas , umrah is a lesser piligramge and not
obligatory . hajj is performed once in a year on a prescribed date , whereas umrah can
be performed at any time and in any month of the Islamic year except the hajj days (8-
13 zill hajj ) . hajj has three types including qiran , ifraad , tamattu whereas umrah has
two types , umrah-tul-tamattu and umrah-tul-mufradah . umrah-tul-tamattu is performed
collectively with hajj , whereas , imrah-tul-mafradah is performed independently .

There is no waquf-e-mina , Arafat and waquf-e-muzdallifah in umrah whereas all these

are the compulsory components of hajj.
