“REFLECTION PAPER IN PERSONAL, SOCIAL GUIDANCE

AND COUNSELLING”

After listening to the discussion about Personal,

Social Guidance, and Counselling, I felt drawn by the
complexity and beauty that counseling brings us. As a teacher,
I consider myself a counsellor as well. Because as a teacher, it
is my duty and responsibility to adapt to different
circumstances that several various pupils bring.

As mentioned in the discussion, listening is a crucial

point in counselling. I was able to pick up on various hidden
clues from listening alone. Listening makes your educand feel
like they are understood from where they are come from.
Through listening, you might be able to attain pieces of
information, even the smallest ones, and make something out
of it.

Empathy is also a great thing to have if you do

counselling. Empathy will help you experience the emotions
and sentiments of what they are currently feeling. It is
essential that they feel understood and included in the whole
situation. I would usually talk to them because I always tell
myself that I should know my students and empathize with
them. In my personal experience from the past, I encountered
a student that was acting odd. I immediately addressed the
situation and talked to them. They told me that they were
feeling blue lately since they are currently experiencing a
problematic scenario similar to what I have experienced
before. I gave her options she could take in fighting what
bothers her at the moment. I told her that, I, too was once in
their shoes and that there was absolutely nothing to be afraid
of.

And last but not the least, what hit me the most is
genuineness. I think this part is where we should focus a lot.
Because the pupils will know. They will know and sense it if
you respond with half-baked advice. It lets them feel that they
are of no importance since the counsellor did not think it
through before they said it to me.

As a final observation, the key to accomplishing

good counselling is being attentive to detail. It might be a
common skill known among different counsellors but still
often miscomprehended. I will take all this knowledge and
wisdom with me, in partaking in my never-ending journey in
this field.
