Introduction :
Introduction:
Artificial Food Color: Artificial food coloring is derived from coal tar and petroleum . People
associate certain colors with certain flavors, and the color of food can influence the perceived
flavor in anything from candy to wine. It used for improve taste, texture and appearance, slow
spoilage, correct natural variations in color. Introduction
Uses of Formalin:
Uses of Formalin Many fish sellers spray fish with 'formalin' -- a chemical usually used for
preservation of tissues. This chemical is mainly used with imported fish and it makes the fish
stiff and keeps them looking 'fresh' for a longer duration. Formalin is also used our regular
products and fruits for preservation.
Uses of food coloring: Improve taste, texture and appearance Slow spoilage offset color loss due
to exposure to light, air, temperature extremes, moisture and storage conditions correct natural
variations in color enhance colors that occur naturally Prevent cut fruits from turning brown
provide color to colorless and "fun" foods
Present situation of our Fishery Market (Bangladesh): As a government survey in five markets
they found 26 formalin treated fish out of 150 samples in which: Name of the market Use of

Tucker Bazaar 6%
Note: The average (Mean) pH value recorded of Rohi, Mrigal, Shrimp, Hilsa and
Catla were 6.27, 6.83, 6.87, 6.79 and 6.87 respectively. :

Health effect of formalin There are a number of hazards associated with the use of formalin. It
readily releases formaldehyde gas, which is both toxic and highly flammable. Accidental spillage
of the solution can quickly raise the concentration of this gas to dangerous levels, posing a direct
threat to health and the risk of fire or explosion. If swallowed, the solution has a corrosive effect
on the mouth, tongue and esophagus, causing pain, vomiting and bleeding. Other symptoms
include kidney failure, effects on the central nervous system and coma. The lethal dose for
humans may be around 1 oz (30 ml).

Bad effect of artificial coloring: They can make food look prettier and more appetizing, but food
coloring isn't quite as attractive when you consider its potential effects on your health. Although
the FDA continues to allow these additives in foods, this doesn't necessarily mean they're
healthy. Effects of food color is given bellow: Organ damage Breast Cancer Birth defects
Allergic reactions Mixtures of dyes cause hyperactivity and Behavioral problems in some
children Artificial colors provide absolutely no nutritional benefit Reduce Immune system
Estrogenic and DNA-damaging activity

Current Situation in Bangladesh: Everything has a standard but it must be free from adulteration,
artificial color and contamination. Safe and nutritious food of good quality prepared under
hygienic conditions is essential for the health of all consumers. The extent of food color
contamination is not entirely clear. Several studies have attempted to measure the intensity of the
problem in Bangladeshi and foreign fruits. DCC's public health department, BSTI (Bangladesh
Standards Testing Institution) which frames standards of food products and also conducts testing
and the Institute of Public Health.

Government takes some steps like as: Increasing consciousness in general people Developing
mind to the sellers Developing law against coloring Build up food laboratory Build up cold
stores around the country Mobile court should be stronger BSTI and Public heath org. have to
take more steps against food coloring.
PowerPoint Presentation:
How we can protect artificial coloring in our product: We should avoid eating fruits and
vegetables which are not seasonal, as the chemicals are used only when the fruits are not
seasonal, because chemicals also cost. It is also better to avoid grind spices or grind it in the
grinder, which is available in the kitchen markets. We have to start to go for organic food. We
have to make propaganda against the artificial food items. We can arrange some consciousness
program (seminar, manob bondhon ) We should make demand on fruit and candies which are
made without artificial color.

Conclusion: Health experts agree that over prolonged periods such consumption amounts to slow
poisoning. Many of these substances are cancer causing and almost all of them have adverse
effects on the digestive system affecting the liver, heart and other vital organs. In a scenario
where the penalty for such crimes of adulteration is either negligible or unenforceable and where
substandard food has become the norm rather than the exception, the public is powerless and
vulnerable. The government, with enough political will, has all the means to bring about change
in the quality of food and therefore of life. Food adulteration and particularly the use of formalin
as a preservative appear to be widespread in Bangladesh. Despite legislation and enforcement
initiatives, the government appears to be far away from a solution. While not ignoring the need
for a more effective governmental response, this report asks: can market mechanisms be
marshaled to help resolve the problem? Is there a role for civil society and citizens? Are there
improvements that can be made to the supply chain? This report suggests that a solution to the
formalin problem requires an affirmative answer to all three of these questions.
