CHMT 2021&25A Topic 2 2021

1. A process engineering system can be continuous, batch, or semi-continuous. The material balance equation is input + generation - output - consumption = accumulation. For steady state systems, accumulation is zero. 2. Examples of applying the material balance equation are given for processes involving salt recovery from seawater, vegetable oil extraction, and brine dilution. Flowrates and compositions of input, output, and intermediate streams are calculated. 3. Additional examples calculate the flowrates and compositions of streams for processes involving slurry dilution, NaOH/Au solution dilution, and HCl/NaCl solution dilution based on given input stream properties and flowrates.
