PR ACCT Homework Week 1

This document contains answers to homework questions for an accounting class. It discusses personnel records needed for a small retailer, potential problems with job references, advantages and objections of internal referrals, sources for replacing a large number of employees, and whether certain application questions comply with civil rights laws. Specifically: 1) Personnel records for a small retailer should include name, address, phone, SSN, hire date, hours, and wages. 2) Requesting references from past employers risks only hearing positive comments from a personal reference rather than true information. 3) In-house referrals can create favoritism issues but save time and costs, while external hiring requires more advertising and recruiting expenses.

Homework Week 1

WI2021-ACCTG-220-L1

1/14/2021

1. What personnel records would you suggest for a small retailer with three employees?

 A small retailer that only has three employees would an application or a form
that contains documentation of the employee’s name, address, telephone
number, SSN, date of employment, regular working hours, and information
about wages.

2. What kind of problem can be encountered when requesting references from previous
employers of job applicants?
 One problem I would say that is common when requesting references is that a
personal reference given from the applicant, can usually be someone that will
make favorable comments about the job applicant. Therefore, the employer
may not be able to obtain the true information about the applicant. This
implication is that the company may end up hiring someone who may not be
qualified or have the necessary skills to do the job.

3. In staffing their offices, some firms encourage in-house referrals (recommendations

of their present employees). What are some possible objections to this practice as a
means of obtaining job applicants? What advantages may be realized by the firm that
uses in-house referrals?
 One objection can be when current employees want to hire a spouse, relative
or their best friend. It can create a homely atmosphere at the workplace, and
this can lead to inefficiency at work.
 Another objection is some employees not all, can refer people just to earn the
incentive and no not care about the quality of the new hire they are referring.
This may lead to inefficient staff and can cause the team to not trust each
other or cause conflict in the workplace.
 One advantage is that it can reduce the time to hire for the qualified applicant.
In today’s fast-paced world, saving time through more efficient processes is a
big priority for most businesses.
 Another advantage is you can reduce the amount of cost it takes to actively
search for a new hire. You wouldn’t pay anything more to your current
employees to advertise your job openings to friends and family. Even if you
offer an employee referral bonus for successful hires, it is typically only a
fraction of what you might have paid for recruiting and advertising.
4. The main office of a large bank has an annual turnover of 500 office workers. As an
employment officer of this bank, discuss the sources you would use in obtaining
replacement employees.
 Sources to replace 500 employees would include LinkedIn to have the best
chance to find a high-quality employee. Local universities can be a good
option to pursue if there are any students studying the relevant field of work
for the job. The idea is to put the word out as much as possible. Sources also
include Facebook ads, post your jobs available on the company website.

5. Among the questions asked on the application for employment form of Horner Company
are the following:

1. What is the name of your church, and what religious holidays do you observe?

2. Where is your birthplace?

3. Are you a citizen of the United States?

4. What foreign languages can you read, write, or speak fluently?

In view of federal and state civil rights laws, do you believe that Horner Company is acting
legally or illegally in asking each of the questions listed above?

 In the view of federal and state civil rights laws, it is illegal to ask questions
about someone’s religious affiliations, church pastor, or the holidays
observed.

 Its also unlawful to ask about their birthplace. Instead, it is legal if you ask the
applicant to submit any proof of citizenship after hiring the applicant. If you
want to ask someone about what languages they speak, write or read, ask them
if they are willing to work in the United States or international and to list all
the languages they are comfortable with fluently.
