CHM 138 BASIC CHEMISTRY

TUTORIAL 2: CONCEPTS OF ACIDS-BASES NEUTRALIZATION (STRONG
PAHANG BRANCH ACID AND STRONG BASE ONLY) [Type text]

Name: Student No:

Answer the following questions.

1. Define Lewis acid and Lewis base.

2. Calculate the pH and pOH of a solution when 0.05 mol Ba(OH) 2 is dissolved in 1 L of distilled
water.

3. A solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) has a pH of 1.8. Calculate the concentration of [OH -] in this
solution.

4. In an experiment, 50 mL 0.15 M aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, NaOH was titrated with
0.25 M aqueous solution of sulphuric acid, H 2SO4. The acid base titration was shown as below;

2NaOH + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + 2H2O

a. Calculate the pH of NaOH before H 2SO4 was added.

b. Calculate the volume of H2SO4 solution required to reach equivalence point.
c. Sketch the general shape of the titration curve. Label the pH at the starting of the titration,
pH at equivalence point and the volume of H 2SO4 at the equivalence point.

5. Consider the titration of 25.0 mL of 0.154 M HNO 3 with 0.353 M LiOH solution.
a. Calculate the volume of the LiOH solution that is required to reach the equivalence point.
b. Sketch the general shape of the titration curve for this reaction. Be sure to label all
important parts.

6. How many grams of HNO3 are needed to prepare 25.0 mL of a 0.500 M HNO 3 solution?

7. A 30.6 g of NaCl is dissolved in 150 mL distilled water. Calculate the molarity of the solution.

8. Water is added to 27.78 mL of a 18.0 M H 2SO4 solution until the volume of the solution is exactly
100 mL. Calculate the concentration of the final solution.

9. How many hydrogen atoms are there in 225.0 mL of 0.56 M H 2SO4 solutions?

10. 150 mL of 0.40 M Mg(OH)2 was diluted with distilled water to 500 mL in a volumetric flask.
a. Determine the molarity of the diluted solution
b. Calculate the mass of Mg(OH)2 needed to prepare 150 cm3 of 0.40 M solution.
