Tutorial Chapter 7

This document contains 12 physics tutorial problems related to rotational motion concepts such as angular velocity, angular acceleration, torque, moment of inertia, and circular motion. The problems involve calculating quantities like tangential speed, centripetal force, angular displacement, angular acceleration, tangential acceleration, torque, and net torque required to bring an object to rest. Diagrams are provided for some of the problems involving force vectors and moments.

TUTORIAL CHAPTER 7

1. A mass of 2.5 kg moves in a circle with a radius of 15.0 cm at a constant angular velocity 5.0
rads-1
a) Calculate the tangential speed
b) Calculate the centripetal force (Mac 2013)

2. A Computer hard disk normally spins at 7000 rpm. If the hard disk takes 5.0 s to reach this
angular velocity starting from rest, calculate
a) the hard disk's angular acceleration in rads-2.
b) the angular displacement of the disk. (Mac 2012)

3. A wheel of radius 50 cm is speeded up uniformly from rest to a speed of 1200 rpm in 30 s.

Calculate
a) the angular acceleration of the wheel
b) the tangential acceleration of a point on its rim. (Sept 2011)

4. A wheel rotates at a constant angular velocity of 1.5 rads -1. What is the angular displacement of a
point on rim of the wheel after 2.0 minutes? (Oct 2010)

5. The tires of a Myvi car make 65 revolutions as the car reduces its speed uniformly from
80 kmh-1 to 30 kmh-1. The tires have a diameter of 0.80 m. What was the angular acceleration of
the tires? (Oct 2010)

6. A wheel starts rotating initially from rest with a uniform angular acceleration and
complete 1 revolution after t = 6.0s. Determine
i) The angular velocity after 6.0s
ii) The angular acceleration
iii) The angular velocity after 2 revolutions
iv) The time taken for the second revolution (Oct 2009)

7. The Earth takes slightly less than one day to complete one rotation about the axis passing through
its poles. The actual time is 8.616 x104 s. Given this information, what is the angular speed of the
Earth about its axis? (Apr 2009)

8. During the time a compact disc (CD) accelerates from rest to a constant rotational speed of 50.0
rad/s, it rotates through an angular displacement of 1.57 rad. What is the angular acceleration of
the CD? (Apr 2009)

9. A wrench is used to tighten a nut as shown in Figure below. A 12 N force is applied 7.0 cm from
the axis of rotation. What is the torque due to the applied force? (Apr 2009)

10. The two bodies of masses m1= 1 kg and m = 2 kg are fixed at the end of a uniform rod
2

which pivots as shown in the figure below. Initially the rod is held in the horizontal

position and then released. Calculate the magnitude and the direction of the net torque
on this system. (Oct 2009)

11. A disk has a moment of inertia of 3x10-4 kgm2 and is rotating with an angular speed of
3.5 rads -1. What net torque must be applied to bring it to rest within 3 s?

12. In Figure below, which of the cases shown the torque provided by the applied force about the
rotation axis biggest? Assume for all cases the magnitude of the applied force is the same.
