Solubility of Potassium Nitrate Lab
Solubility of Potassium Nitrate Lab
Aims: 1) To investigate how the solubility of potassium nitrate varies with temperature.
Apparatus: stirring rod, burette, retort stand, test tube rack, test tube holder, boiling tube,
2. 15g of potassium nitrate crystals were added to the water in the boiling tube. The
mixture was added gently while stirring until all the crystals dissolved.
3. The solution was cooled until crystallization began. The temperature of crystallization,
1T
and the volume of solvent, V were recorded.
1
4. 2cm3 of water was added to the above mixture and heated while stirring until the
crystals dissolved. The resulting solution was cooled until crystallization began. The
temperature of crystallization, T and the new volume of solvent was recorded.
2
5. A further 2cm3 portions of water was added, step 4 above repeated and the
temperature of crystallization T3, T4, T5, T6 and the corresponding total volume of
solvent V3, V4, V5, recorded.
V6.
6. Use the following relationship to determine the solubility at each temperature:
Solubility in grams of solute per 100g of water
= 15 × 100 where V is the volume of solvent.

TABLE SHOWING -SOLUBILITY OF DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES IN GRAMS OF SOLUTE PER 100G
OF WATER
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Plot a graph of Solubility versus Temperature using a full size graph leaf. (Marks will be
deducted if the graph leaf is altered). The graph should be pasted on an entire page in the lab
book
Interpretation of Results :
1. Predict the solubility of potassium nitrate at 75°C and at room temperature. (Room
temperature is 25°C).
2. Calculate the mass of crystals which will fall out of the potassium nitrate solution in
100g water at 60°C which is cooled to 40°C.
Conclusion:
Solubility is the mass of a solute that can be dissolved in a given mass of solvent so solubility
varies according to temperature for the same solute and solvent.
