2 Introduction

SparkWave SDR GE 2A is a multi-purpose cost effective point to point microwave

radio. This easy-to-use, microwave link is designed for high capacity Gigabit Ethernet
applications.

Up to 3 independent cooper GEth channels and four SFP slots for additional port
extension are available.

Operating frequency ranges from 4 to 42 GHz. 17 and 24 GHz no licensed bands.

Modulation up to QAM1024 and bandwidth up to 56 MHz can assure effective,
flexible and scalable connections even for very long distances and/or for very high
capacities.

ACM (Adaptive Coding & Modulation) in combination with QoS (Quality of Service)
guarantees transmission of real-time critical services without latency variation, even in
case of bad weather conditions.

Aggregation possibility of native Ethernet guaranties both redundancy and higher

capacity in 2+0 mode, reaching 877 Mbit/s full duplex.

Optionally additional native E1 or ASI can be configured. Up to 4x16E1 can be carried

out using external termination box.

5 Description

The indoor unit is fitted with three 1000Base-T (RJ45) user ports, where one port can
be reserved either for individual management connection or as a standard user port.
Four SFP slots are intended either for additional Gigabit Ethernet connection.

COMPACT-UNI IDU consists of two main boards. Interface Card performs the
function of data interface, packet processor and management unit. Modem card
performs the function of digital modem (DSP) and analogue modem (analog front end
with mixers and filters).

IDUGE module has the following functional parts:

1. PBPS – Packet multiplexer

2. Transmitter part

3. Receiver part

4. ACM (Adaptive Coding & Modulation)

5. IF Branching

6. Device management system and management service channel

7. DC/DC Power supply

5.1 PBPS – Packet multiplexer

Data are fist processed by integrated six port Gigabit Ethernet Switch, where two
WAN ports of the switch are connected into universal Packet Processor (PBPS –
Priority Based Packet System). SFP interfaces are also directly connected into
universal packet processor. Function of packet processor depends on selected
design and functionality of the IDU. Digital mode then adds synchronization marks,
FEC to the data stream and creates a digitally modulated signal, which is led to the
block of analog signal processing. All these parts are interconnected inside the device
over high-speed bus and are operated from the central processor unit CPU. This
block (CPU) is also accessible via management interfaces and allows the user to
perform all the settings both locally and remotely through the IP interface in the
COMPACT-UNI IDU.

The function of Packet Processor is specific in dependence on selected design.

Generally, Packet Processor uses priority scheme, which ensures that data at the
internal port ETH 4 are processed with the highest priority whereas data at the
internal port ETH 1 with the lowest priority.

5.2 Transmitter part

The transmitter part performs following operations on input data stream:

Forward Error Correction - FEC. It is performed in more stages: scrambler, outer

coder (Reed-Solomon), interleave and inner coder (Convolution with Viterbi
decoding). FEC enables error correction of detected data stream at the receiver side.

Signal mapping circuit enables base-band signal arrangement to I and Q branches of

QAM modulator. Desired QAM modulation scheme can be software selected.

Pulse-shaping filters enables zero ISI (itersimbol interference) filtering according to

Nyquist criterium. The filter coeficients are programable.

12-bit digital samples of I and Q signals are led to D/A converter. Analogue signals
obtained from D/A converter are led to the analogue IF stage.

5.3 Receiver part

In the receive direction, the incoming analogue IF signal is converted to the base-
band digital data stream and led to the central module.

12-bit A/D converter samples the analogue signal. After that, QAM demodulator,
shaping and FEC decoding coherently demodulate the signal.

All filters and interleavers are programmable. All parameters of receiver are easily
configure by software and adapted to different channel conditions.

5.4 ACM (Adaptive Coding & Modulation)

ACM (Adaptive Coding & Modulation) in combination with QoS (Quality of Service)
guarantees maximal spectral efficiency, while preserving transmission of real-time
critical services without latency variation, even in case of bad weather or other
propagation conditions.

5.5 Analogue IF stage

On the transmitter side, I and Q components of analogue signal are filtered by low-
pass filter and modulated by quadrature modulator by means of local oscilator signal.
MQAM modulated IF signal is connected to outdoor unit ODU via coaxial IF cable.

In the receiver direction, the analogue IF signal (150MHz) is first band-pass filtered
and then amplified. The amplifier has automatic gain control circuitry – AGC to
prevent AD converter overdrive caused by to-high signal input level. After
amplification the analogue signal is converted to digital by means of A/D converter.

5.6 IF branching

Indoor and outdoor unit are connected via coaxial cable. Five different signals are
transmitted to both sides. This function enables IF cable branching circuit. It
separates transmit and receive IF signal, two-way local communication signal for
management purpose and power supply voltage for outdoor unit.

5.7 Device management system

Device management is integrating into device. It manages complete device (IDU and
ODU). Local management is possible via USB or IP protocol. Out-of-band
management configuration is also possible.

It is preferred scheme when more links in series is managed and the management
access is originated from any link locations or from provider’s management node. The
communication with remote side is ensured by means of configurable separated
middle speed traffic channel. Management traffic runs through the internal ETH
switch inside each IDU, and transmits separate from data traffic through radio links.

3 SFP 1 UPLINK2 TM16E1 card in TM16E1 chain or to relay IDU in
add/drop configuration
Power supply connector, + pole is grounded inside
4 -48 VDC
the device

The basic function of TM16E1 is multiplexing of specific data types (E1, T1, ASI, …)
into high speed data stream which is then transported over Fiber Optic interface
(SFP2) to the COMPACT-UNI IDU described earlier. Such coded data stream is
muxed with other data sources (ETH channels) inside IDU and transmitted to the
remote IDU and appropriate remote TM16E1. Up to four TM16E1s can be connected
in series to one COMPACT-UNI IDU.

Management of all TM16E1s is integrated inside IDU management system, therefore

the configuration of all TM16E1 parameters is similar to IDU configuration.

The TM16E1 unit must be connected to the power supply with a nominal voltage of -
48 VDC and GND must be connected to the positive pole.
