This document contains 6 numerical problems related to heat transfer mechanisms presented in a lecture. The first problem involves calculating the rate of heat loss through the roof of a home and the cost of air conditioning. The second and third problems involve determining convection heat transfer coefficients. The fourth problem involves calculating the rate of radiation heat transfer between a person and surrounding surfaces. The fifth problem involves calculating the total rate of heat transfer from a person through convection and radiation. Contact information is provided at the end.

Lecture – IV Numerical on Heat Transfer Mechanisms
Nischal Chaulagain Department of Mechanical Engineering Kathmandu University Numerical -I
• The roof of an electrically air conditioned home is 6 m long, 8 m wide
and 0.25 m thick and is made of a flat layer of concrete whose thermal conductivity is k = 0.8W/moC . The temperature of the inner and outer surfaces of the roof at one of the night were measured to be 15oC and 4oC respectively for a period of 10 hours. Determine the followings. - Rate of heat loss through the roof considering heat transfer is only through conduction - Cost of air conditioning, if the electricity tariff per unit is Rs. 10.25.

Numerical -III • A 2 m long, 0.3 cm diameter electrical wire extends across a room at 15oC . Heat is generated in the wire as a result of resistance heating and the surface temperature of the wire is measured to be 152oC in steady operation. Also, the voltage drop and electric current through the wire are measured to be 60 V and 1.5 A, respectively. Disregarding any heat transfer by radiation, determine the convection heat transfer coefficient for heat transfer between the outer surface of wire and the air in the room.

Numerical- IV • Consider a person standing in a room maintained at 22oC at all times. The inner surfaces of the walls, floors and the ceiling of the house are observed to be at an average temperature of 10oC in winter and 25oC in summer. Determine the rate of radiation heat transfer between this person and the surrounding surface if the exposed surface area and the average outer surface temperature of the person are 1.4 m2 and 30oC, respectively. (Consider emissivity of human body to be 0.95)

Numerical V • Consider a person standing in a breezy room at 20 . Determine the total rate of heat transfer from this person if the exposed surface area and the average outer surface temperature of the person are 1.6 m2 and 29 , respectively, and the convection heat transfer coefficient is 6 W/m2. (Consider emissivity of human body to be 0.95)
