The group gathered ideas about the lights and shadows of the 5

dimensions in the society (social, political, economic, cultural and religious) in

the past and the present.
For the social dimension, the group has collected 6 lights and 5
shadows. The positive side is more on the social interaction of families and
friends is likely to happen face-to-face. The interaction can strengthen their
relationship with one another. Social change also protects the LGBTQ+
community, has improves racial equality and creates citizen empowerment
as well. When it comes to the negative side or the shadows of the social
dimension, digital technology became one of the reasons why less
interaction happens to every family and this separates the members from
interacting with one another personally. The presence of cyberbullying and
racial discrimination came and social movements in civil rights was made. It
also heightened the perceptions of crime problems. With technology, it
made a change that it created a new social group.
Political dimension has less lights than shadows. The lights of this
dimension are, leaders during the past were firmer and has more conviction.
Competent leaders surely take action rather than making promises to the
Filipino citizens. Political leaders serve the people whole heartedly. Lastly,
politics managed all aspects such is education, health and the population.
Then there were changes in the politics that became the shadows. To return
for their political support, voters waited or expected to receive money from
them. Palakasan system occurs in which one gains favor, promotion, or
political appointment through family affiliation or friendship as opposed to
one's merit..There are some political leaders that lack of clear direction and
plan. In many cases, the politician’s performance is based on dole outs not
on policies or programs. Promises given to the Filipinos aren’t kept. The
Political Family Dynasties in the Philippines also happen in the Philippines.
Another shadow is election fraud.
As for the economic dimension. Its lights were, the Philippines ranked
12 among the 40th countries in the Asia Pacific region. Agriculture then and
th

now is a very significant part of the economy, but industrial production in

such areas as electronics, and apparel is rapidly growing. The Philippines is
one of the fastest growth rates in the Asia Pacific as the country’s GDP stood
at 6.8 in the year, 2018. Duterte’s Build Build Build (BBB) program is also
lifting several sectors. The Philippines is primarily considered a newly
industrialized country. There are a few shadows that happened in the
economic dimension. These are the the Philippines’ economic freedom score
is 64.1, making its economy the 73rd freest in the 2021 Index. Inflation
started to rise in 2018 due to the implementation of the TRAIN law, higher oil
prices in the global market, and the shortage of cheap rice in the market.
Also, consumers lost confidence in the economy as they alter their speding
habits and reduce the demand for goods and services.
Philippines has its own culture and traditions that also has positive and
negative sides in the past and the present. The positive sides are, bayanihan
wherein Filipinos, unite and help each other. Serenading Filipino women
happen in the past. Filipinos are respectful people. Filipinos show respect to
the elderly by kissing the elder’s hand on the forehead. The Filipino people
are also religious and there is a tradition that Filipinos always do and that is
the pamamanhikan. Our architectural design shows so much of our nation’s
identity like, Bahay Kubo (Nipa Hut), Bale (Ifugao House), Ivatan House,
Torogan (Marano House), Badjao’s Stilt Houses and Houseboats, Vinta (A
traditional colorful boat in Mindanao). As time flew, there are a lot of habits
that Filipino do like, procrastination, “Bahala na” or “come what may” and
the Filipino time. Another shadow are crab mentality and hypocrisy.
Filipinos also have religious beliefs that also have lights and shadows.
For the lights, a Filipino family is always praying together. The religious view
that “everything happens for a reason” can be comforting during difficult
times. It allows people to believe that someone (God) understands them and
loves them. Religion teaches us to be kind, to forgive, and serve others. It
promotes humility and gratitude. For the shadows of the religion dimension,
religion has a history of resisting the development of science. Some religious
groups encourage people to vote for political candidates and they even have
to go further and claim that you have to belong to their religion to achieve
salvation. Lastly religious beliefs were used as a reason for sacrificing people.
