Chapter V

This document summarizes the conclusions of a thesis analyzing the structural elements in poems by William Wordsworth. It finds that Wordsworth uses appropriate diction related to nature. His use of imagery, rhyme, rhythm, patterns, and other elements all work together to achieve the overall meaning of the poems. The analysis concludes that the poems are well-constructed works that demonstrate Wordsworth's closeness to and concern for nature through their interconnected literary elements. The document ends by suggesting how teachers can instruct students in analyzing poems using this structural approach.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. CONCLUSION

Beside prose and play, poem is one of the forms of literature. It has a

special characteristic as work that has the most condensed language than the other

forms. To find the meaning of a poem, the reader needs certain knowledge. Actually,

there are some approaches that can be used to analyze the meaning of the poem. They

are genetic, socio-cultural, semiotic, structural and etc. in this study; the researcher

chooses structural approach to be used in analyzing the complexity of poem.

By structural approach, the researcher means that all elements give their

contribution to achieve the whole meaning of poem. In this case, the object of the

study are poems, so that the researcher tries to find the interrelation among the

elements of the poem; they are theme, diction, imagery, rhyme, rhythm, pattern,

sound and sense, and tone. And the aim of the study is to find out whether those

elements have their contribution in achieving the whole meaning of the poem or not.

In this study, the researcher prefers to choose poems of William

Wordsworth that are “She dwelt among the untrodden ways”, “I traveled among

unknown men”, “My heart leaps up when I behold”, “The sun has long been set”, and
“I wandered lonely as a cloud”. The researcher is going to make conclusion of the

elements of poem which interrelate and support to each other.

The researcher concludes that Wordsworth chooses appropriate words or

diction. Most of the subject of his poems is about nature so that his diction is not far

from natural things e.g. stars, rainbow, wind, sun, bird, tree, water etc. To describe
131
the subject of his poems, he uses concrete words. It also gives right imagery and

makes the poem rich of meaning by making some of them as figure of speech.

The situation involved in poems, Wordsworth put concrete words to give

clear description and makes figurative of them to build certain imagery and deepen

the meaning of the poem. By figurative and imagery used, the situation involved are

clearly understood

The next is about the use of rhythm. It is one of elements of poem which

deals with the music made by the words of the poem. This music is produced by

stressed and unstressed syllable of the words. There are kinds of rhythm based on

stressed and unstressed scheme; they are iambic, trochaic, anapestic, dactylic,

spondaic, and pyrrhic.

Iambic pattern, consists of two syllables which have unstressed on the first

syllable and stressed on the second syllable, is used in all of poems analyzed by the

researcher. Iambic is acknowledged to be the most natural rhythm in colloquial

English. So that, the iambic pattern is familiar to the society and it is used in the most

everyday spoken language. And because Wordsworth is poets who close to nature,

most of his poems use iambic rhythm.

A poet is free in expressing his idea or his feeling. And so do in choosing the
words. Words composed by the poet produces certain rhyme especially end rhyme. It

can be regular even irregular end rhyme. Wordsworth does not always use same end

rhyme in his every poem. The use of the end rhyme regularity deals with theme

carried out by the poet. And Wordsworth is able to combine the rhyme to support the

theme then makes coherence among the other elements.

Rhythm and rhyme build form of the poem or it is called pattern of poem.

Pattern used by Wordsworth is different to each of poems. It is depended on the idea

or theme expressed by the poet. For example: rhyme and rhythm in “I Wandered

Lonely as a Cloud” form ‘stave of six’ pattern. It is used in order to support the theme

of the poem that is happiness. There is clear that elements of poem are interdependent

to each other.

The next element that the researcher is going to conclude is the

contribution of tone. Tone is the speaker attitude toward his subject, his audience or

himself. Tone can be determined by analyzing the contribution of the other elements

such as rhyme, rhythm, figurative language, and pattern. And the researcher has

found the tone of each poem. She concludes that the other elements have contribution

in identifying the tone.

The poet takes the words and throws the other words based on some

considerations. He chooses the right words that have the suitable sounds to make the

coherence among the elements of the poem.

By analyzing five of Wordsworth’s poems, it means that the researcher is

given an appreciation or judgment. An appreciation can be done by having the basic

requirement if analysis. The researcher has to understand the knowledge well and
then try to analyze the work based on the certain theory. The theory of structuralism

is basically needed in appreciating a work. The work is then judged as bad or good

work when all the elements support the theme of the poem. There must be no useless

elements. Diction used is interrelated with the other elements, for example it is

supporting the imagery and on the same time it is related with rhythm to build the

meaning. The rhyme and other sound recurrences are represented to shape the totality

of the structure, sounds effect and meaning. The pattern of the poem as the form of

self expression is not standing by itself, because it must be connected with the theme.

The sound and sense gives its contribution to the central idea. From the above

consideration and after passing the analytical process, the researcher admits that “She

dwelt among the untrodden ways”, “I traveled among unknown men”, “My heart

leaps up when I behold”, “The sun has long been set”, and “I wandered lonely as a

cloud” are built on the unity and coherence among the elements. Hence she concludes

that they are great works of William Wordsworth.

As great works in Romantic period, those poems are written in the

different year. The important thing that must be underlined that, although they are

written in the different year but all of them show that the poet is close and concerns

to nature. There just difference in expression and attitude.

B. SUGGESTION

After analyzing and drawing conclusion, the researcher puts forward some

suggestions that are possibly valued at both teachers and students of English

Department and others in general.

1. Especially for teachers of literature, poem can be used as the material in teaching

literature, especially in literary appreciation class. Beside to shape the students’

ability of appreciation, it is able to generate new experiences through the

students’ life. To describe the way of teaching, especially based on this study, the

researcher suggest the following steps:

a. The teacher explains about the poem itself and about structural approach.

b. The teacher instructs the students to read the poem for several times in order

to get better understanding

c. The teacher then guides the students to get the lexical meaning of the poem or

paraphrase the poem and shape them to have the same concept about the

theme. The teacher may ask them to find some other sources which are

relevant to the poem from library or Internet sites.

d. in the next occasion, the teacher clarifies about the relation of each elements

of poem to achieve the whole meaning. He gives a view of structural

approach that is appropriate to the poem the students have read. Then the

teacher discusses it in detail, starting from the finding the theme furthermore

he explains how the elements become parameters of the analysis.

2. For the students who are interested in studying poems by using structural

approach and other approaches, this thesis can be used as additional information

in analyzing the poem.
