9 Flight Operations and Technique

This document provides information on various NOTAMs, flight plans, procedures, and techniques for adverse weather conditions. It covers topics like calculating decision heights, runway visual range measurements, holding patterns, procedures for low visibility takeoffs, rules of the air, aerodrome lighting systems, recognizing conditions like windshear and icing, and what to do if encountering volcanic ash. The document gives pilots guidance on flight rules, notifications, planning, and operating safely in different circumstances.

Flight NOTAM (NOTices to Air Men):

Operations Information of Facilities, services, procedures, hazards and timely

Class: 1: Urgent
Class 2: less urgent

AIC (Aeronautical Information Circulars): Published monthly and concern administrative matters and warnings of operational
changes.

Flight Plan: Controlled Airpace, Special rules Airspace, above FL245, Cross FIR boundaries.

DH: Go around must be initiated

Measured of the radio altimeter or QFE
MDA: QNH

Calcurate DH:
1 or 2 + Altimeter PEC (position error correction) for not advanced Acft
1-) Hightr OCH (Obstacle Clearance Hight
2-) Approach Minimum

RVR (Runway Visual Range) of High Intensity Lights can be see.

Reported: Touchdown Zone / Midpoint* / Stop End*
*if less than touch down or 400m
Visibility less than 1500m
Measured in steps of: 25m up to 200m / 50m up to 800m / 100m

Taxiway: HST (High-Speed Turnoff runway)

Rate of Turn:
1: 3˚/” - 180 ˚/’
2: 6˚/” - 360˚/’
3: 6˚/ - 540˚/’

Port Wind in northern Hemisphere: Low pressure System

Rotation: Correct ensures the correct run distance and achieves climb speed

Jet noise: The shear effect at the boundary of the jet efflux.
Higher power: faster shear and greater is the noise.

Vapp: Vref + (1/2 stable wind) + (full gust – stable wind) *limited +20
Is only just above Vimd (Minimum drag speed). Below Vimd an increase of thrust has a great drag penalty for speed gained.

Reverse: More efficient at high speed because the mas flow is greater

Approach Following MTOW

Separation: H M L
Lead 4nm 5nm 6nm
H
2’ 3’
136k
5nm
M 3nm
3’
7k
L 3nm

Less than 1000ft behind

May space closer
Take care in light winds

Departure Separation: 2’: Aircraft Departure from the same position

3’: Leading Aircraft using full length and following aircraft intermediate position.
IFR Flight Rules Holding Pattern:
(IFR Procedures Sector: 1 Parallel / 2 Teardrop / 3 Direct
and Flight Standard Rate of turn: 1deg. Per sec.
Technique) Time: FL140: 1’/above fl140: 1’:30”

MABH:
Minimum Approach Breakoff Height
Lowest Height of the wheels above the ground that if a go around were initiated

Procedure Turn
An outbond track from the fix and the reciprocal of the approach track
45˚: 1’:15” / 45”
80˚/260˚

Base Turn: Teardrop Pattern

You can extend the outbond leg of a holding pattern when the inbound track of the hold is the same as the NDB or ILS procedure
is published as such.

Low Visibility Takeoff:

HIRL Center Lights
RVR:
TDZ: 150m
MID: at least equal the TDZ
END: Can be Less
No HIRL Center Lights
TDZ: 200m
MID: at least equal the TDZ
END: Can be Less
Air Law Give Way: Turn Right and Pass behind the other aircraft
Over take: Turn Right and keep right

Right of Way on the ground: Takeoff, Landing and Towing

Order of Priority: Landing/Takeoff/Towing/Taxing/Others
Way on the Air: Lower

Aircraft Navigation Lights

Identification Beacon: Flashes a two-letter morse identifier the Airdrome. Green: Civil. Red: Military
Aerodrome Beacon: Flashes an alternating homing signal. White/white or White/green.

Touchdown zone lights: CATII/III

VASI: three bar: Large Aircraft: Ignore the first/Small: ignore the Third.

Runway Holding Markings:

Continuous lane first: Hold affects you/Need atc clearance
Broken Line first: Hold not affect You/Not require clearance
Adverse CB Avoid: Above FL300: 15 to 20nm
Weather Below FL300: 10 to 15nm
Recognition
and Flight Windshear: Can be experienced between cells/increase approach speed
Technique Microbust: Not Attempt in approach/Hold 10 to 15’

Aquaplaning/Hidroplaning:
Tire skating (not rotating)
Wedge between the tire and the runway
Lifts the tire of the ground
Types:
Dynamic
Viscous: Very thin film/lower speed/smooth
Reverted Rubber: Boils the water and reverts the rubber
Wet runway: thrust reverses are most effective

Ice Conditions:
Thrust Reverse should be avoided
Keep a good distance behind the aircraft ahead
Anti-Icing Fluids:
Type I: Unthickened/High Glycol/Low Viscosity
Type II: Thickened /Minimum Glycol +/-50% = (thickened agent + glycol). Remain on the aircraft in the holdover time and
protection against refreezing.
Engine Anti-Ice: Switch System Separately
Precautions:
-Avoid
-Visual Check: Visible Moisture
-Temperature:
On the Ground: SAT/OAT is 10˚C or lower
In Flight: TAT (SAT+kinetic effect) colder than 10˚C and Warmer than -40˚C
SAT: Colder than -40˚C: Ice Crystals, not pose on the aircraft
Warmer than -40˚C: Super cooler water, stick on the aircraft
Adverse Volcanic Ash
Conditions
Flight Engine Flame Out:
Technique Ash Builds up on Compressor which upset the airflow
Deprives the combustion chamber of the air

Contact:
Immediate 180˚ turn away
Engine anti-ice
APU: On
