Project:
Cargill
Natural adhesives for fibre-based packaging
Table of Contents:
1. Advantages and disadvantages of the
natural adhesives Starch and Dextrin, and
the synthetic adhesive Vinyl
2. Current Applications
3. Competitor analysis
1. Natural Adhesives (Starch and Dextrin)

● Starch and dextrin-based adhesives play a larger part in industrial

production (especially packaging industry).
● Starch and dextrin are principally used for bonding paper products.
● Most corrugated boxboard can be easily joined with available versatile
adhesives.

Starch Based Adhesives

● A suspension of starch granules in water, with additives of resin etc. Often

made from animal waste.(Gelantin-production)

Starch Based Adhesives

Advantages Disadvantages
Cheap & easy to manufacture Low wet gluing capacity

Good machinability Low ice proof properties

Clean running Unsuitable for plastic or metal

High initial tack

Bonds well to glass

Not temperature sensitives

6 month shelf life

Dextrin Based Adhesives
(based on potatoes, wheat or corn starch)
Advantages Disadvantages
High initial tack No ice proof properties

Suitable for hot, dry containers Low solubility

Unsuitable for coated glass, plastic and

mental

Synthetic Adhesive ( Polyvinyl acetate
and Polyvinyl alcohol)

Source: ( TESA, 2017)

Polyvinyl acetate and Polyvinyl alcohol
( PVA/PVOH)
Advantages Disadvantage

● PVA glues do not emit strong fumes ● Curing time could take up to 24 hours
● Non toxic and non flammable ● Has limited shelf lives, typically 1-3
● Wet glue can be wiped away with water years
● White PVA glue dries clear ● Not water resistant
● Low manufacturing cost
● Strong bond, easily applied
● Gets dried under room temperature
● More biologically compatible
● High chemical and thermal stability
● PVA is a type of biodegradable resin when
if is an artificial polymer derived from
petroleum
2. Current Applications

Adhesive has been used throughout the history of mankind:

● Furnitures that got buried with the Egyptian king got covered with wood veneers filled
with adhesive.
● Weapons like arrows got glued with feather.
● Adhesive is still being used till now.
