After a year of pandemic, the educational system around the world has undergone major
changes. Teachers and students have to adapt to new challenges in the teaching-learning
environment, which create a wide range of problems for both parties. Some of these
issues can be controlled and others not so much. Teachers must have the ability to
identify problems that they can solve during their class. Our group has written some
topics which we consider essential in the learning and teaching process.

First of all, one of the problems that we find in our classrooms is that the students do not
have the same level of language. For example, one student knows how to conjugate the
verb to be while others only have a basic knowledge of the language (colors, numbers,
etc.). How can we teach a specific topic to all students with different levels of language
skills?

TEACHING PROBLEMS:

We had identified an important teaching problem:

Teachers do not have enough capacity to teach the English language to students with
special educational needs (SEN), for example, if a student has autism, it is important to
know how to work with them, applying pedagogical and didactic strategies that help us
understand the way of learning of the student, in such a way that they help to involve
them. in a positive learning process.

It is important to mention that it is not only the work of the government or DECE but of
us as teachers. In fact, we must prepare ourselves to learn new strategies to involve all
students to participate in class without making any kind of distinction.
LEARNING PROBLEMS.

We also find two learning problems in our classrooms.

1. Some students do not learn in the same way as others, which means that not all
are at the same level in relation to learning. Some students have the ability to
capture information in an easier way, and in other cases, it takes more time to do so.
For example, some students have finished their activities, and they have to wait for
others to finish, in that time they get bored because they have to wait for others. So
for this problem we decided to give them additional activities. What else can we do
to keep each student interested in learning the language?

2. When students feel more comfortable using only L1 while learning a second
language, and when the teacher pushes them to use L2, they are reluctant to do so
because they say they understand grammar points better using L1. Even though
when the teacher uses realia, pictures, mimicry and other teaching materials, the
students would not understand the topic because the teacher did not explain in

Unfortunately, some of them are even supported by parents as well who state that if
a teacher tries to speak only in English, their children won’t understand the topic, so
they won’t be able to do the homework because they didn’t get the explanation.
How important is it to engage students to form their early stages in using English as
a second language?
