Course Description
This course is designed to provide students with a sound understanding of the use of
scientific approach in business research fields. It introduces students to the research process
and skills with particular reference to business research.
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to assist students in developing a broad understanding of the research
process, and research skills in particular.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
Possess adequate skills in three approaches to research, namely, the quantitative,
qualitative and mixed methods approaches;
Identify and develop a research problem and discuss its relevance;
Identify the purpose of a study and develop appropriate research questions/ hypotheses;
Describe the elements of a literature review and conduct an annotated bibliography on a
specific research topic;
Identify the combination of research skills which are relevant to a specific research topic;
Develop a research proposal; and
Analyze and report research findings.
Teaching strategy
This course uses lecture and discussions as major modes of delivery. There will be a three
hour lecture together with discussions per day and all students are expected to attend all the
classes.

Assessment criteria and methods
Students will be assessed for this module through individual and group assignments and
presentation.
The final mark for this module will be on the basis of:
a. Assignment (individual) 30%
b. Preparation and presentation of a research proposal (group) 40%
c. Final Exam (Conceptual and includes all chapters) 30%
