Initial Switch Installation and Configuration

1. The document provides instructions for an initial switch and LAN configuration assessment lab involving connecting 4 client PCs to 2 new Cisco switches and configuring basic switch and IP settings. 2. Key tasks include connecting the PCs to the appropriate switch ports, setting hostnames and management IPs for each switch, configuring port descriptions, and verifying connectivity between all devices. 3. Completing all configuration steps correctly and passing connectivity tests between the PCs, switches, and router is required to receive full credit for the assessment lab.

In this Lab exercise, Tyrell Corporation have requested that the recently deployed layer 2
environment be optimised. The initial layer 2 Local VLAN and Trunking configurations unique
to each device have been applied.

l.c
You are tasked with configuring STP, STP optimization and Layer 2 protection features in
this scenario. When you have completed the tasks, you will be able to Check Results
ba
1. Ensure that the Distribution Switches are the root of the Layer 2 networks
a. DSW1 should be the Root Bridge for VLANs 1,11-14 and 99, while DSW2
provides the backup Root Bridge for these VLANs
om

b. DSW2 should be the Root Bridge for VLANs 31-34, while DSW1 provides the
backup Root Bridge for these VLANs
c. The Root Bridges priority should be 8192 lower than the default, while the
Backup Root Bridge priority should be 4096 lower than the default
2. A convergence event should be contained within the 1-2 second timeframe
db

3. All trunk links should have an explicit configuration that overrides any
misconfiguration of duplex for fast convergence.
4. All Trunk links should implement a control mechanism that prevents broadcast from
consuming more than 20 percent of uplink bandwidth
5. All active host-facing ports should implement a control mechanism that prevents
vi

broadcast from consuming more than 40 percent of interface bandwidth

6. All active host-facing ports should move to the forwarding state immediately.
da

However, these ports must be protected from any attempt by rogue devices to alter
the spanning-tree.
7. Host-facing ports should only be allowed to learn one mac address dynamically per
port. This should be written to the running-configuration. Host-facing ports should
remain active at all time, but these ports should log any attempts by any other mac
address to connect to the network and increment a security counter on each attempt.

Initial Switch and LAN Configuration

Packet Tracer Files: Assessment Lab

In this simulation scenario, you have recently joined the Cisco Partner as a Jnr. Network
Engineer. You have been asked by the Senior Network Architect to complete your first client
network installation, configuration and verification on your own.

om
The client is Sirius Cybernetics Corp. They have asked for a new small office LAN network ro
be installed and configured as per the design documentation. This will be an ongoing project
for you and the initial LAN setup and configuration involves connecting the client PCs to the

l.c
new Switch hardware installed recently on site. You will be expected on site over the weekend
to configure the PC clients with their IP address information, connect the PCs to the wired
network and configure the basic parameters of the two new Cisco Switches and the
connection to the previously installed and configured router. The router does not need
ba
configured at this time – it was configured prior to being sent to site.

Specifically, you will need to ensure the following if configured and verified in order to
successfully complete the installation as well as receive the 100% in this Packet Tracer
om

Assessment Lab scenario:

1. Client PC’s 1 – 4 require connection to the new switches.

a. PC1 and PC2 will connect to Ports 1 and 5 respectively on SW1 and should
have addressing configured for the 10.1.1.0/24 network. PC1 should have the
db

.101 address and PC2 should have the .102 address. Both clients should be
configured with the lowest available IP address as their default gateway.
b. PC3 and PC4 will connect to Ports 1 and 5 respectively on SW2 and should
have addressing configured for the 10.1.1.0/24 network. PC3 should have the
vi

.103 address and PC2 should have the .104 address. Both clients should be
configured with the lowest available IP address as their default gateway.
da

2. Clients PC’s 1 - 4 require connecting to the network with the appropriate ethernet
cables.

3. Switch1 requires the following initial configuration:

a. Hostname: SW1
b. Hostname resolution should be disabled
c. The default management network must be configured with the IP address
10.1.1.11/24 and a default gateway 10.1.1.1. Ensure the management network
is enabled and connectivity verified.

d. The console should be configured with a 30 minute inactivity timer. The console
should not be interrupted by any erroneous messages received on screen
e. The port connecting to PC1 should be configured with a descriptor ‘to PC1’
f. The port connecting to PC2 should be configured with a descriptor ‘to PC2’
g. The Switch to Switch interconnection should be configured using port 3 on both
new switches. A descriptor should be configured from each respective switch
with ‘to SWX’ – X being the switch each connects to.
h. The switch interconnection should use the appropriate cable to form the
connection. Speed and duplex should be set manually to the highest capable
on the devices.
i. SW1 to the Branch Router should be configured to use port 2 from SW1 and
connected to interface G0/1 on the Branch Router. A descriptor should be
configured from SW1 with ‘to Branch Router’ and the appropriate cable

om
should be used to create the connection. Speed and duplex should be
manually set to create the connection and reflects the highest speed capability
of the SW1 port.
j. All unused interfaces are to be shutdown.

l.c
4. Switch2 requires the following initial configuration:
a. Hostname: SW2
b. Hostname resolution should be disabled
ba
c. The default management network must be configured with the IP address
10.1.1.12/24 and a default gateway 10.1.1.1. Ensure the management network
is enabled and connectivity verified.
d. The console should be configured with a 30 minute inactivity timer. The console
om

should not be interrupted by any erroneous messages received on screen

e. The port connecting to PC3 should be configured with a descriptor ‘to PC3’
f. The port connecting to PC4 should be configured with a descriptor ‘to PC4’
g. The Switch to Switch interconnection should be configured using port 3 on both
new switches. A descriptor should be configured from each respective switch

with ‘to SWX’ – X being the switch each connects to.

h. The switch interconnection should use the appropriate cable to form the
connection. Speed and duplex should be set manually to the highest capable

i. All unused interfaces are to be shutdown.

5. Once all parameters have been configured, you should check that all devices have
connectivity. From the client PC’s you must check that each PC has connectivity with
the default-gateway, SW1 and SW2 IP addressing as well as among the PC’s.

You will be able to Check Results for your score and use this as possible hints and tips as
to what to check to get the 100% score. The Packet Tracer assessment file will grade you
and point you to check certain conditions have been met to score this lab on. There are
connectivity tests built into this lab to test connectivity from the client PCs to each of the
Branch router default gateway, SW1 and SW2 management IP addresses. These

connectivity tests will score you extra points and are essential in achieving the 100% score
in this assessment.
As this is an assessment lab, a copy of the completed .pkt file has been provided for
configuration comparison.
Good luck everyone, enjoy the lab – and Go get that 100%!
