Computer Networks MidTerm - Spring 2021 4A

The document appears to be a midterm exam for a Computer Networks course, consisting of 4 questions testing students' understanding of topics like switching vs circuit switching, bandwidth-delay product calculations, bit rate and packet latency calculations, buffer sizing, data rate calculations, packet sequencing, hybrid network topology design, subnetting, and IP addressing schemes. The exam is to be filled out by both the teacher who taught the course and administered the exam as well as the student taking it.

Answer the following questions.

Question 01: [3+2]

a. Describe the need for switching and make a comparison between circuit switched
network and a packet switched network with respect to network applications.
b. Suppose there is a 100 Mbps microwave link between a geostationary satellite and its
base station on Earth. Every minute the satellite takes a digital photo and send it to the
base station. Assume a propagation speed of 2.4 * 108 meters/sec.
1. What is the propagation delay of the link?
2. What is the bandwidth-delay product?
3. Let x denote the size of the photo. What is the minimum value of x for the
microwave link to be continuously transmitting?

Question 02: [4+7]

a. Assume that there is a need to download some text document at the rate of 130 pages
per minute. A page is an average of 22 lines with 90 characters in each line and each
character requires 8 bits. What is the required bit rate of the channel?
b. What is the end-to-end packet latency in this store-and-forward subnet from router 2
to router 8?

HOST A 2 4 8 HOST B
4 8
Given Data:
Link size: 45 km;

Bandwidth = 100Mbps;

propagation speed = 100 m/microsec

packet size = 4000 bits

Question 03: [3+3+3+3]

a. If bandwidth is 10bps and delay is 10 seconds, how much data must be buffered before
sender responds to slowdown request?
b. What is the maximum data rate that can be supported on a 1000 kHz noise-less channel
if the channel uses ten-level digital signals?
c. What is Packet Sequencing and which layer in OSI Model is responsible for this
function?
d. Each bus has five nodes. Keep following this, design a network of hybrid topology
with a ring backbone, three mesh networks and star network.

Question 04: [3+5]

a. The wire bandwidth is 3100 Hz and the SNR is 2600, what is the capacity of the wire?
b. Consider the following Subnet number
123.22.66.34

And subnet mask

255.255.255.224

Carefully design the diagram displaying how can we build 4 subnets out of this. Find
the following values for this network.

1. Total number of hosts in network

2. Overall range of IP addresses in network
3. First IP addresses for each subnet along with subnet mask.
4. IP ranges for all subnets
