III. Procedure

A. Motivation/Preparatory Activity

The students will be shown a short video of Nick Vujicic’s talks to inspire them and
segue the Public Speaking Lesson.

The students will be asked the following after viewing:

1. What is your impression of Nick Vujicic?

2. Was he able to inspire you?
3. Why do you think he is travelling around the world, engaging himself in
speaking to a wide and varied audience?

B. Presentation of the Lesson

Teacher will recite five opening lines from famous speeches. Then she will present
the objectives, asking the students what they think the topic for discussion is
afterwards.
C. Discussion

Generally, the term “public speaking” connotates addressing the masses (or
large number of people commonly gathering in communities). However, public
speaking taken on a more personal level is influencing other people through the
power of speech. That is being able to “inform and educate”, “persuade and
convince”, and “entertain” the receiver of the message (Zafar, R. 2019).

But commonly for students, public speaking is a terrifying feat, even if it is

contained in the classroom set-up. Speaking to an audience other than
ourselves is not an easy task. Let us examine why.

According to the article “10 Causes of Speech Anxiety that Create Fear for Public
Speaking” written by Gary Genard, the following are the reasons:

1. Self-consciousness in front of large groups.

2. Fear of appearing nervous.
3. Concern that others are judging you.
4. Past failures.
5. Poor or Insufficient Preparation
6. Narcissism
7. Dissatisfaction with your abilities.
8. Discomfort with your own body.
9. Poor breathing habits.
10. Comparing yourself to others.

To overcome the abovementioned causes could be a difficult task especially with

the internal factors but with practice and applying the right techniques for you,
public speaking won’t be a problem in the future.
Before we proceed however with the techniques, of public speaking let us take a
minute to slow down and discuss the ethics of public speaking. Why is there a
need to know the ethics of public speaking? In order to avoid inflicting verbal
harm against your audience or cause misunderstanding and upset.
The ethics of public speaking according to lumenlearning.com are:
1. Be Honest and Avoid Plagiarism
2. Identify your Sources
3. Decide when to Cite
4. Cite Sources Properly
5. Understand Paraphrasing and Direct Quotations
6. Develop Accurate Citations
7. Set Responsible Speech Goals
8. Use Inclusive Language
9. Avoid Hate Speech
10. Raise Social Awareness
11. Employ Respectful Free Speech
Now that you have been oriented about the ethics of public speaking, we will now
move on to tackling the techniques of public speaking according to Laura
Spencer in her article “15+ Effective Public Speaking Skills & Techniques to
Master”. These are the following:
1. Care About Your Topic
2. Remember Your Speaking Goal
3. Support Your Main Points
4. Tell a Story
5. Use Presentation tools Wisely
6. Use a Professional Template
7. Practice Your Speech
8. Work with a Coach (optional)
9. Relax
10. Don’t Worry About Mistakes
11. Pace Yourself
12. Add Visual Aids
13. Dress Comfortably, But Professionally
14. Avoid Awkward Fillers
15. Use Gestures (But Don’t Overdo)

D. Generalization

After discussion, the students will be asked their realization/s about the topic.

E. Application

Utilizing the Peer Assessment in a form of Buddy System, students will recite a 2-
minute speech in front of their buddies. They will be rated using a provided checklist.
The checklist contains the factors and techniques of public speaking contextualized
for the students. They will take turns in reciting.
