The document contains summaries of three sources that discuss the legalization of marijuana from different perspectives. The first source discusses the negative effects of marijuana on brain development in youth. The second source argues that marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco while acknowledging its potential negative mental effects, especially in teenagers. The third source argues that legalizing marijuana could generate tax revenue and save billions spent on enforcement while creating new jobs.

Bin Yu, Xinguang Chen, Xiangfan Chen and Hong Yan “Marijuana legalization and historical
trends in marijuana use among US residents aged 12–25: results from the 1979–2016 National
Survey on drug use and health” BMC public health 04 February 2020,
https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-020-8253-4

Throughout this article it gives an extensive background about marijuana. The article
contains a lot of facts and research studies about the effects of marijuana on the brain. It states
that people in the United States ages 12-25 use marijuana the most. It also explains that within
this age group they found a delay in brain development in youth which then effects their ability
to socially interact with other and being able to express/understand emotions.
This specific part of the article is important when trying to see the way marijuana can
negativity effect someone’s brain especially within the younger people of the community. If
legalization of marijuana happens, I believe that their will be an age restriction such as alcohol
has as well. With this drug it can really make an impact on the brain. It slows down motor
functions and can ultimately cause an issue with that person down the line. This article is a
great source for my essay because of all the different information it holds.

Roni Caryn Rabin “Legalizing of Marijuana Raises Health Concers” New York Times 07 January
2013 https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/07/legalizing-of-marijuana-raises-health-
concerns/?searchResultPosition=3

In this article it states that smoking marijuana is much safer than alcohol. It says that it is
virtually impossible to overdose. However it does state that marijuana can become an addictive
substance but fewer the 10 percent of people actually become dependent. They explain what
endocannabinoids can do to the brain and the areas it can affect. Such as the memory and
concentration. Which causes teens the most. They did a study where they test people who
smoke marijuana and those who don’t. The people who smoked the marijuana had lower IQ
scores and SAT test scores.
This can help my exploration essay by saying the marijuana is not as dangerous as
alcohol. It compares the two with statistics of addiction. It also compares marijuana and
tobacco and how it effects the lungs. I believe this article can help people understand and see
the other side of marijuana and not just all the negative things. This article shows both sides on
how it can be bad mentally especially in teenagers, but it also shows how it is not as bad as
other substances/alcohol that is legal within the United states.

Robert Reich “Why We Must Legalize Marijuana” Prospect.org 28 May 2019

This article talks a lot about how we are wasting money by having a ban on marijuana in
the United states. It says that when people get arrested for possession of marijuana wastes
billions of dollars every year. We tax tobacco and alcohol why not do that with marijuana? This
is the main question throughout this article. It states that we could be generating million if not
billions of dollars a year by legalizing marijuana. It explains that every time someone gets
arrested for marijuana it hurts our economy. Meaning that there is lost wages and causes
people to have a hard time finding work. By legalizing this drug, it could create a lot of job
opportunities in the economy.
This article is very pro legalizing marijuana and point out a lot of things people don’t
realize. This would be a huge asset in writing this paper. It does bring up a lot of positive
opportunities for our economy by legalizing marijuana. I didn’t really realize the opportunities
for job it could create and how many people get effected by the lost wages from getting in
trouble for having marijuana issues with the government.
