Guideline For Preparation of EPANET Project Report

This document provides guidelines for students to prepare an EPANET project report, which is worth 20% of their final grade. Students will use the EPANET software taught in class to conduct a hydraulics problem. The 10-page report should include an introduction, description of the data and methods used, details of the computer model created, results and discussion, and conclusions. Appropriate screenshots and figures with captions must show the modelling steps and outputs. The report structure, formatting, figure and table citations, and appearance guidelines are also outlined.

Guideline for preparation of EPANET project report

• This project is 20% of your final mark.

• The purpose of this project is to conduct a Hydraulics problem using professional commercial
software (e.g. EPANET).
• The software will be taught in the classroom in one of the sessions in Term 1.
• You need to submit a report for this project.
• The report should be limited to 10 pages (including the front page, references and appendixes).

1
• The report should explain the software used for the analysis, all the modelling steps, all the
inputs, other relevant modelling details, relevant outputs, interpretations and discussions of the
result outputs, and references.
• Appropriate screenshots are mandatory to show various steps of modelling and the output
results.
• Number all figures and tables in your report and caption them. For example: “Figure 3.
Screenshot of the model output showing the amount of flow discharge in each pipe.”
• Follow the following structure for your report:

 1- Introduction: here give info about the project and appropriate context
 2- Data and methods: here explain the software and the input data
 3- Computer model: here explain the computer model that you made
 4- Results and discussions: here explain the results
 5- Conclusions: here make conclusions
 References

Format of the report:

1) Font-size can be 11 or 12 and font type can be “Times New Roman” or “Arial”.
2) All Figure and tables in the report should have a caption; see the following examples:

Figure 11. Sketch showing the plot of the pump equation used in the project.
Table 2. Results of flow discharges in all pipes of the project.

3) All Figure and tables need to be cited in the text and need to be discussed at some parts of the
text. Use statements like the following:

As shown in Figure 5, the discharge in pipe-2 is 55 lit/s which is the maximum value among all
pipes in the system. The full results of flow discharges in pipes are given in Table 6. …

2
4) See the following example on how to put an appropriate caption for a Figure. Also, note that
three figures are combined together into one figure. In fact, this is one figure with three panels
a), b) and c). If you have several small photos, you can combine them into one figure with
several panels as shown in the following example from Heidarzadeh et al. (2020)

5) Appearance of the report and arrangements of paragraphs are important. Avoid having short (2-
3 lines) paragraphs.
