C-78 Flexural Strength of Concrete (Using Simple Beam With Third-Point Loading)
POINT LOADING)
PROCEDURE
Prepare the specimen and the loading machine capable of applying loads at uniform rate,
e.g. Universal Testing Machine (UTM), to be used in the activity. Important notes to consider are
that forces applied to the beam shall be perpendicular to the face of the specimen and applied
without eccentricity or inclination of the point loads. Standard specimen dimensions are 152 mm
x 152 mm (6 in. x 6 in.) in cross section and a length of not less than 508 mm (20 in.) for a
maximum aggregate size up to 50 mm (2in.). Sides of the specimen should be at right angles to
its top and bottom. All surfaces in contact with load-applying and support blocks should be
smooth and free of scars, indentions, holes, or inscribed identifications.
1. Turn the specimen on its side, with respect to its position as molded, and center it on the
bearing blocks. Center the loading system in relation to the applied force.
2. Bring the load-applying blocks in contact with the surface of the specimen at the third
points between supports.
Note. If full contact is not obtained at no load between the specimen and the load-
applying blocks and the supports so that there is a 25 mm (1 in.) or larger gap in excess of
0.1 mm (0.004 in.), grind or cap the contact surfaces of the specimen, or shim with leather
strips.
3. Apply the load rapidly up to approximately 50% of the breaking load. Thereafter, apply
the load continuously at a rate that constantly increases the extreme fiber stress between
860 kPa and 1210 kPa (125 psi and 175 psi)/min until rupture occurs. The loading rate is
calculated using the following equation:
4. Take three measurements across each dimension (one at each edge and at the center) to
the nearest 1.3 mm (0.05 in.) to determine the average width, average depth, and line of
fracture location of the specimens at the section of fracture. After gathering data,
compute for the modulus of rupture.
If the fracture initiates in the tension surface within the middle third of the span length,
calculate the modulus of rupture as follows:
If the fracture occurs in the tension surface outside the middle third of the span length,
by not more than 5% of the span length, calculate the modulus of rupture as follows:
