A participle is a verbal that is used as an
adjective and most often ends in -ing or -ed.
The term verbal indicates that a participle, like
the other two kinds of verbals, is based on a
verb and therefore expresses action or a state
of being. However, since they function as
adjectives, participles modify nouns or
pronouns.
Participles fall into two groups:
Present Participle (-ing) is used to
describe something or someone.
Present participles:
Recycling companies and junk shops are
always on the lookout for resourceful
individuals eager to dispose of their waste
properly.
The crying child asks for his mother.
The baking bread smells delicious.
Ex. The interesting show is worth to watch.
Past Participle (-ed) is used to describe
how someone feels or what happen to
something. Past participles generally end in –ed
but may also have irregular endings such as –t
and –en.
Past participle:
Ex. Mixed garbage is just useless waste.
Frozen blueberries are his favourite dessert.
The cracked vase cannot be repaired.
Ex. Interested, Jack watched the show.
A Participial phrase consists of participle
and its related words such as modifiers
complement and all of which that act as
adjectives.
Examples: Studying the frown in his mother’s
face.
The participating colleges had a desk at the

Defeated teams should not make excuses for
