1 Family Engagement
4.6.1Describe the advantages and importance of family or caregiver involvement in
learner development

Family engagement is a process to build relationships with a child and make their

child feel worthy. When families are engaged in their child's life their child tends to

behave in class and pays attention to what they're learning. A teacher needs to

communicate with the students' families for an understanding of what is going on at

home and to understand the engagement between the family.

When a teacher is communicating with the families of their students they need to

be willing to work with each family. The teacher can communicate with a newsletter that

will go home with the child so that their guardian can understand what their child is

learning about and what is going on at school. As a teacher, you can put the newsletter

in the language that the child speaks at home so that way it can be easier to

communicate with parents. (4.6.1.1 Newsletter)

When you're communicating with a parent you want to talk about everything

overall, not just the things that child has done wrong because the guardian of the

student is going to get tired of their child always doing the wrong thing. Instead, start by

saying the good things about that student and what that child has done right, and how

they're succeeding. Parents that get told about disagreements by the teacher that they

had with their child can often angry a parent because parents want to know that their

child is doing well when they first walk in. (4.1.6.2 what do parents want from teachers

Article)
Teachers need to know how to react to certain situations like how to deal with a

student that can't stay focused or a student that could be abused at home and know

how to work around/ towards the problem. Students that have their family pushing them

towards a class or to go to college can be hard on a child because they will have anger

towards the class or not want anything to do with their class because they're too

distracted with what's going on at home. A teacher can contact a parent about the

problem by email, video chat, in-person meetings, or whatever works for that specific

family. (4.1.6.3 Scenarios with parent personality types)

Teachers need to know what will work best for the student's family and need to

understand how to work with them. Communication with families for a teacher is very

important and important for the families because if the families see that you're putting

effort towards them they are willing to try and communicate with the teacher.
