Mactan National High School Mactan Lapu-Lapu City S.Y 2020-2021 2 Semester/3 Quarter

This document provides learning tasks and solutions related to statistics and probability for a grade 11 student. It includes problems calculating areas under the normal distribution curve and probabilities related to mean and standard deviation. The tasks help explain the importance of assuming normal distribution for data and understanding a teacher's standards of excellence.

2ND SEMESTER/3RD QUARTER

STATISTICS & PROBABILITY

WEEK 4

Name: Reyver Abellanosa

Grade & Section: XI-CSS
Subject Teacher: Ms. April Marie Yaun
LEARNING TASK 1

Instruction: Observe the main characteristics of the normal distribution curve. Complete the

statement by filling in the appropriate word or term on the blank.

1. Its highest point is directly above the mean.

2. The curve is symmetric with respect to the vertical line passing through the mean.

3. It approaches the axis asymptotically on both sides.

4. The bell curve varies in shape depending on the mean and on the standard deviation.

5. The mean, median , and mode are equal.

6. Exactly half of the values are to the left of center and exactly half the values are to

the right.

7. The total area under the curve is 1.

LEARNING TASK 2

1. Find the area between z = -1.35 and z = 2. 95.

-0.135 0 2.95

Solution:

Let A= area between z=-1.35 and z=2.95

A1= area between z= 0 and z= -1.35

A2= area between z= 0 and z= 2.95

From the table

A1=0.08851

A2=0.9984

A= A2 - A1
A=0.9984-0.08851

A=0.9099

Hence, the area between z=-1.35 and z=2.95 is 0.9099.

0 1.56

2. Find the area to the right of z = 1.56

Let A= area to the right of z= 1.56

A1 = area between z= 0 and z= 1.56

A2 = area of the half of the curve

From the table,

A1 = 0.4406

A= A2-A1

=0.5-0.4406

=0.0594

Hence, the area to the right of z = 1.56 is 0.0594.

-1.52 0

3. Find the area to the left of z = -1.52

Let A= area to the left of z= -1.52

A1 = area between z= 0 and z= -1.52

A2 = area of the half of the curve

From the table,

A1 = 0.4357

A= A2-A1

=0.5-0.4357

=0.0643

Hence, the area to the right of z = -1.52 is 0.0643.

In Math test, the mean score is 45 and the standard deviation is 4. Assuming normality, what

is the probability that a score picked at random will lie:

0 1.25

45 50

4. above score 50?

Step 1:Find z
x − x̄
𝑧=
𝑠

50 − 45
𝑧=
4

z=1.25

Let A= area to the right of z= 1.25

A1 = area between z= 0 and z= 1.25

A2 = area of the half of the curve

From the table,

A1 = 0.3944

A = 0.5 – 0.3944

A = 0.1056

Hence, the probability that a score picked at random will be above score 50 is 10.56%.
-1.75 0

38 45

5. below score 38?

x − x̄
𝑧=
𝑠

38 − 45
𝑧=
4
z = -1.75

Let A= area to the leftt of z= -1.75

A1 = area between z= 0 and z= -1.75

A2 = area of the half of the curve

From the table,

A1 = 0.4599

A = 0.5 – 0.4599

A = 0.0401

Hence, the probability that a score picked at random will be below score 38 is 4.01%.
LEARNING TASK 3
The trunk diameter of a certain variety of pine tree is normally distributed with
a mean of mean of 𝜇 = 150 cm and a standard deviation of 𝜎 = 30 cm.

60 90 120 150 180 210 240

Trunk diameter (cm)

“Why is it important for statisticians and researchers to assume that the data they are dealing with

are normally distributed?”

“As a student, why is it important to know the standard of your teacher when it comes to student’s

academic performance or achievement? How do you satisfy your teacher’s measure or standard of

excellence?”
