LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO.3 WEEK 3

I.INTRODUCTORY CONCEPTS:

Correct manual handling and techniques in loading and unloading in

irrigation work is a must in operations to minimize damage to the materials
tools and equipment and prevent the workers from possible hazards. These
learning activities focus on guidelines for safer lifting and storing of the
materials, tools, and equipment in irrigation works, you will explore the outside
world of loading and unloading of things in industrialized production.

II.LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELC:

1.1 Demonstrate correct manual handling and techniques used when loading and
unloading materials to minimize damage to the materials, tools and equipment.

III.LEARNING ACTIVITIES

VOCABULARY LIST:

MANUAL HANDLING –worker’s hands move on individual containers manually

by lifting, lowering, emptying or carrying them.
MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES FOR SAFER LIFTING:

• Plan the workflow to eliminate unnecessary lifts.

• Avoid manually lifting or lowering loads to or from the floor.
• Use mechanical devises (e.g. lifts, hoists of pipes) whenever possible.
• Clear spaces to improve access to materials or products being handled.
Easy access allows workers to get closer and reduces reaching, bending
and twisting.
• Just carry loads that you can only handle.
• Using PPE will prevent you from wok hazard while loading or unloading
materials.
• Pad your shoulder in lifting heavy materials
• Using equipment like industrial tiller will decrease the forces in lifting,
pushing or pulling materials.
• Proper handling of materials will increase productivity, product quality
and worker morale.
• Alternate heavy tasks with light tasks for a day lessen back pain or
injury.
• Keep the load close to your body and lift it by pushing up with your leg.
• Team lifting is possible if co-workers of similar height to help with the
lift.
• Using tool lifter reduces bending and reaching when handling materials.
• Before lifting, always test the load for stability and weight.

PRACTICE TASK 2
Techniques in handling of irrigation tools
Directions: Give the techniques in the handling of materials as shown in the
pictures below to facilitate easy lifting. Choose your answers inside the box
and write it in your answer sheet

Wear proper size of gloves that will fit in your hands. Rubber gloves can increase grip stability on a
slippery surface
Don’t carry more than you can handle. To reduce the weight of the load, use a smaller container.
Use an airball table to make the container easy to slide, thereby reducing work effort.
Use scissors lift with a foot pump to raise so that container can be slide on or off.
Redesign the container so it has handle grips or handholds.
Pad your shoulder when lifting a heavy object.
Use industrial tillers to have access to lifting large container and make the handling of materials
easily
Use padding when lifting a bucket or choose a bucket with a clamp-on handle.
Used two-wheel hand truck designed for climbing stairs
Used a flatbed cart when your load is full and heavy

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO.4 WEEK 4

I.INTRODUCTORY CONCEPTS:

Many accidents happen in the farm due to improper handling

and procedures when performing a job or work in the farm. Not following
right instructions may also a cause of injuries and accidents in the farm.
This topic will help the learners/farmers to minimize the accident in the
farm through following material and equipment handling procedures

II.LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELC:

1.2 Follow material and equipment handling procedures.

CODE: TLE_AFAC9-12IW-IIIa-e-1

III.LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Handling – the action of the one that handles something; operation; control;
running.

Procedures- a series of steps or a particular way of accomplishing

something; a series of actions that are done in a certain way or order.

Equipment handling– (v) operated or controlled by a trained person for a

particular equipment following the manufacturers’ guidelines.

SAFETY PRACTICES IN USING FARM EQUIPMENT

1. Always read the manufacturers manual before using tools and
equipment.
2. Use PPE when conducting a work/task
3. Follow the steps, do not take short cuts.
4. Stored tools and equipment in their proper places
5. Tag –out ruined/warn equipment and report to the immediate
supervisor.

How to Deal with an Accident due to misused of tools and equipment

People should have time in dealing with an accident, they may have to:

1. Help the injured person and give first aid.

2. Clean up
3. Reschedule the job
4. Repair/reset the equipment or check for faults
5. Investigate the accident and prepare reports

PRACTICE TASK 1
Do in irrigation works

Directions: Analyze the irrigation work situations below. Identify if it is a safe

practice or not. Put DO if it is a safe practice and DON’T if it is not a safe
technique.

1. Used a hacksaw with proper blade and size for cutting a pipe.
2. When using a hacksaw, apply pressure on down stroke only.
3. When installing an irrigation system, do not use rubber gloves in digging.
This will hinder your operation.
4. Use string for proper layout of trencher cut and dispose of it after use.
5. Handle the sack of cement to be stored even your hands are wet and
messy.

PRACTICE TASK 2.

Poster on proper handling of irrigation tools and Equipment

Directions: Create a poster on the proper handling of irrigation tools and

equipment that you should observe while working on the farm. Apply your
learnings on this activity to make your poster beautiful and comprehensive. A
sample of a simple poster is given for your reference. Do it in a short coupon
bond.
