KEY FEATURES
Project Goals

Benefiting 11 million customers

1 Billion euros invested
To be deployed by 2023
3 major goals

Automatic and daily reading of gas consumption data

Increased delivery frequency of consumption data

Modernization and performance of gas distribution network

Project business case
An overall profitable project Unwith
projet financièrement à l’équilibre
a mere 1.5% energy savings assumption

Business case results

• The overall investment cost is about 1 billion
euros.

• CAPEX and OPEX costs are financed by the

tariff.

• The project is at the end largely profitable for

the society (+835 M€) thanks to energy
savings expected.

• We believe that globally a mere 1.5% energy

savings is highly possible thanks to frequent
consumption data. Compared to UK project
hypothesis of 2%, GRDF’s 1.5% is quite a
prudent hypothesis.

2010 2011 2013 2016 2017 2020 2023

5 416 000 smart meters deployed in May 2020

7 392 data concentrators in May 2020

Positive balance regarding incitative regulation

16
Smart Gas meters, for what benefits ?
Smart grid, smart company
Provide your customers daily data and bill them on real consumption data.
• Make sure you can bill them even if you cannot go read the data. i.e. Covid Crisis

Reduce your operational costs

• No more meter manual reads : cycle readings, move-in/move-out, tariff change, supplier change
• Less work force management : planification, cars, fuel, material, data collection
• Reduced customer management : no more errors, less claims and recovery

Enhance your operational results

• Detection of unusual consumption : high, low, on a shut off meter, without contract, fraud
• Incident/accident analysis : where was the leak ?
• Consumption profiling & forecasting to providers, transmission, institutions, engieneers, data analysts, etc.
• Optimisation of the network : network design, financial flow with providers, less storage, biomethane injection

Renew your IT measurment, CRM & billing system, and asset databases
• Remote reading needs a new IT and is an opportunity to propose new billing processes. E. g. e-bills
• An opportunity to get field data during installation : geoposition, inside installation, usage, customers, etc.

Upgrade your employee’s skills and optimize organisation

• Diversification of skills for field operators (electronics) and new digital skills (data analysis, IA)
• Business process and compagny organisation can be review along deployment

And a whole new field for ideas !

• Services for customers, for local authorities, for energy management
• Paying services for customers : diagnostic, recommandation, renovation financing, incentives, etc.
17
Focus on IoT infrastructure : what other use cases ?

In our gas company, a central asset. To date applications:

• Commercial & Industrial readings
• Remote shut off & on of assets
• Sensors on the network : gas flow and pressure measurement,
cathodic protection, CH4 detection
• Injection metering (Biogas, tranmission, reverse flow, etc.)

For external services, a business opportunity:

Beyond the Pilot – Enterprise Scale Meter Operations

After decades of pilots and painful at-scale rollouts we look at why utilities
are gravitating to head-end agnostic metering systems to centralize the
receive treatment and distribution of smart meter data and events.
