PART 1: THE GENERAL QUALITIES OF A GOOD COMMUNITY LEADER

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

COMMUNITY - a unified body of individuals. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

a) The people with common interests living in a particular area.


b) A group of people with common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society.
c) A body of persons or nations having a common history or common social economic, and political
interests.
d) A group linked by a common policy.
e) State

LEADER – a person who leads. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

COMMUNITY LEADER – a person who leads group of people.

QUALITIES OF A GOOD COMMUNITY LEADER:


What does it take to be a good community leader?

SELF- AWARENESS
 In order to lead other, identify your abilities first.
 List your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses.
 Build your own strength and learn how to ask for help in other areas.
 Look for the best fit for you: how best can you help in each situation.

EAGERNESS TO LEARN AND ADAPT


 Learn how to accept that you will never learn all perspectives on a situation.
 Be willing to listen, learn and change course.
 Consider the voices of your community members.

EMPATHY
 Imagine – Imagine the different viewpoints
 Understand and validate – Understand the validate the feelings of all parties.
 Recognize - Recognize how you are perceived.

HONESTY AND INTEGRITY


 A good community leader must be trustworthy, to the community, to other
leaders, and those that are listening.
 Trust creates productive space to facilitate discussions and make change.
 Mutual respect is diminished and productivity is eliminated without honesty and
integrity.

DEDICATION
 A good community leader must be committed to fostering change.
 Volunteer – it does not just benefit your community; it benefits you as well.

SERVICE
 Doing something for your community would not hurt you at all.
 Volunteering creates a stronger bond for the community members and its leaders.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
 Communication skills, like negotiating, active listening, and articulating arguments
are essential.
 Collaborative skills mean that leaders can work well with other people and create a
productive space.
 Community leaders can describe why something is important and how to facilitate
change to any person, be it child or volunteer

FORWARD-THINKING
 Good community leaders think outside the box, look to the future, and have set
specific goals in mind.
 Develop innovative and critical thinking skills.
 Being a forward-thinker makes it inclusive for the future generations.

INTELLIGIENCE
 Not just being smart- a good community leader needs high level of emotional,
social, and intellectual intelligence.
 Competence shows that, as a leader, you can take care of the tough stuff.

MOTIVATION
 A good community leader motivates others to create change in their own lives and
communicates.
 As an inspirational leader can make all the difference in engaging others in
improving the community.
