II. Agenda Topic: STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING STUDENTS WITH BEHAVIORAL
PROBLEMS
Time Allotted: 1 HR (1PM – 2PM)
Presenter: MR. ARVEE DAVE T. GIPA

Narrative of Discussions:
The meeting started with a prayer led by Mrs. Oabel Followed by the
update of our Department Coordinator, Dr. Esther Biniahan
Mrs. Ceriola had an update too, if the teachers were able to apply the
previous topic in PLC which is Classroom Management.
Mr. Gipa, the presenter for the month started his discussion about
Strategies for Teaching Students with Behavioral Problems.
This are some of strategies that Mr. Gipa discussed:

1. Take a deep breath and try to remain calm.

2. Try to set a positive tone and model an appropriate response, even if it
means you must take a few moments to compose yourself.
3. Make sure students understand that it's their misbehavior you dislike, not
them.
4. Give the misbehaving student a chance to respond.
5. Never resort to blame or ridicule.
6. Avoid win-lose conflicts.
7. Insist that students accept responsibility for their behavior.
8. Try to remain courteous in the face of hostility or anger.
9. Treat all students respectfully and politely.
10. Be an attentive listener.
11. Model the behavior you expect from your students.
12. Specifically describe misbehavior and help students understand the
consequences of misbehavior.
13. Be aware of cultural differences.
14. Discourage cliques and other antisocial behavior.
15. Teach students personal and social skills.
16. Teach students academic survival skills.
17. Avoid labeling students as "good" or "bad."
18. Focus on recognizing and rewarding acceptable behavior.
19. Ignore or minimize minor problems instead of disrupting the class.
20. Where reprimands are necessary, state them quickly and without disrupting
the class.
21. When it's necessary to speak to a student about his or her behavior, try to
speak in private.

Lastly, the teachers shared their own experiences and strategies

regarding student’s behavior.
The meeting ended with the assignment of the next topic and presenter.
Conclusions/Recommendations:
1. There are different factors that contribute to student’s behavior – hormones,
challenges with peers, and home-life problems.
2. Not all teachers are trained to handle the demands of children with special
needs.
3. The teacher should apply the simple steps discussed in handling behavioral
issues.
4. The teacher must constantly update and inform the parents, as well as the
guidance office to monitor the student’s behavior and progress.
5. The meeting ended with the assignment of the next topic and presenter.
