Cuin 6320-Digital Storytelling - Kahoot For Kindergarten
Intro: Voiceover
Hello, my name is Pamela Raftice, and as a Kindergarten educator, the questions “Why does it
matter if students have an opinion? “or “They are just in Kindergarten, right, who cares what
they think?” have been asked of me. Wrong! And I care! “Slight Pause”
“Show Kindergarten students entering classroom”
Do you remember your first day of Kindergarten? I DO! You walk into a classroom with all new
kids you do not know. There are assigned names on desks, name places on the floor, students are
told when to eat, when to play, and rules are posted on the walls of things not to do. The teacher
then calls everyone to the Red carpet for circle time and starts to read a story, “The Three Little
Pigs.” “Pause” Not very often are students asked how they feel throughout the day or even if
they want to participate in “circle time.” So many students are silenced not to express their
opinions. That is why I want to give Kindergarten students a voice by using technology in the
classroom. “Play upbeat music.”

Allowing students to walk freely around the classroom or join virtually, and check themselves
into class for attendance, may not appear to be a good idea to some educators. And that is ok.
However; Educators and Leaders, do you like to see students get excited about coming to
school? Students raising their hands enthusiastically because they know the answer? “Show
Kindergarten raising their hands to use interactive whiteboard” Students taking the initiative to
learn new skills and wanting to mentor their peers? If so, incorporating technology into the
classroom curriculum is just what you need.

As an undergraduate student, I worked as a teacher assistant for a Pre-Kindergarten classroom.
The teacher was a great mentor, but the students did not have much of a voice. The classroom
consisted of teacher-directed academics, and play, all the time. Students mainly drew on white
paper with crayons or markers that were pre-selected by the teacher. Mostly all the student’s
artwork looked the same. One day a student came to me and asked, “Ms. Pam does it matter
what us kids think?” “Show an image of Kindergarten students talking to the teacher,” And
honestly, I did not know how to respond, but after some thought, I said, “yes, it certainly does.”
From that moment, I started incorporating spontaneous free play into the classroom. I also added
a “voicebox,” where students could draw and place their ideas. Next, I arranged for some
technology “Show an image of computers, iPADs, and voice box” to be added to the classroom.

whiteboards, “Show the image of students with interactive whiteboard” story maker software,
and class technology apps such as Seesaw, Class Dojo, Kahoot, and even Chatterpix.
“Play motivational music.”
Our students have so much creativity they want to share and using some of these technologies in
the classroom is sure to keep your students excited and engaged. I love using
Seesaw-Because students create portfolios
Kahoot- enhances student motivation (Have you ever tried
Jeopardy on Kahoot?
Class Dojo- students earn rewards for assignments

using your authentic voice." "Show an image of Former First Lady Michelle Obama quote"
Technology in Kindergarten allows students the opportunity to tell their story from their
perspective. Advantages of technology in Kindergarten include students are more creative and
enhance their communication skills. Educators see an increase in attendance while also being
able to assess students' academic progress immediately. "Show image of students interacting."
Students can use apps such as Chatterpix to take pictures and record videos for teachers. When
students can voice their perspectives through the use of technology, they are empowered to take
the initiative in their own learning. Let's all give students an active voice through the use of
technology. Thank you.
