Reinforcement Act 1

Filipinos now view national holidays as "no classes" rather than appreciating their historical meaning. This is because the education system conditions students to see holidays as rest days rather than opportunities to learn history. Limited historical information also affects how history can be read and appreciated today. For sources like monuments or documents to be considered historical, they require a human element to provide context and credibility. Establishing the genuineness of sources is important before extracting credible details, as it certifies the information for readers.

Reinforcement Activity 1

A) Try to remember the last national holiday that we have. Why do you think that the
common perception of a holiday is “no classes” (walang pasok) to the point that it has
become its meaning? What were lost, that we have come to view national holidays as
this? Why were they lost?

Filipinos nowadays are used to expect “no classes” when a national holiday is
approaching. It became part of our norms that is why most of us forgot the essence and
true meaning of national holiday. When we commemorate a national holiday we tend to
forget what we are celebrating for. In reality, through this time we spend much of the
day by having fun with our families, doing academic workloads, taking some rest and
recharging for the next day. Without even looking back to our rich history why we have
holidays. It is believed that the meaning of holiday lost due to many factors we are
prioritizing. To this day, individuals take this opportunity – holiday to pause for a
moment of their lives to do whatever they want. Hence, the individuals’ perspective
towards “national holiday” today is to rest and recharge.

Holidays like the National Heroes Day, the Independence Day became to the
idea of “Walang pasok” because the present educational system is made in a way that it
pushes students to think that whenever there is a holiday, they would consider it as their
rest day, why would they consider it as their rest day? Because maybe the present
educational system is not suited for most or some of the students. Because if the
present educational system is made in a way that they call national holidays as the time
to recuperate or to assess oneself in his/her studies, our own educational system is
rigged with that kind of mindset. It will be embedded in the minds of students that an
upcoming national holiday will not be the time to appreciate the underlying history but
the time to rest.

B) In Gottschalk’s book, history as now being read, is only a very minute portion of the
totality of history for very few information of the past were observed, few were
remembered, few were recorded, few survived. How would this affect your reading and
appreciation of history today?

There is a saying, “History repeats itself.” Even though history has already
passed, the events that happened in the past can be a passageway, or a guide on how
individuals should move forward to the present and future. Through this, appreciating
the events that happened in the past will help us be a more understanding, critical, and
rational individual to choose the correct choices when faced as such.

Having rich and diverse information about history makes it more captivating for a
person to believe on the information written about a certain story or event. Supporting
details, credible information and well-explained sequences are few to look for when
identifying whether the story is authentic or not. In our modern world, history is the main
tool for remembering the past, but due to the limited information recorded, remembered
and survived, it affects the reading and appreciation today. Because the reader will
doubt if the story is reliable. Having said this, appreciating history today is far beyond
the way other people appreciate that specific event.

Credibility and authenticity will always be a factor in determining how true a

history is. Since some lack information and some were not remembered, it certainly is
doubtable to believe what history says now. Although it can still be appreciated just by
acknowledging how historians were able to gravel their way to discovering the
foundation of knowledge we have. Bringing the knowledge to a whole other level is what
history is about for it teaches us how everything came to be and whatever history were
not remembered, focusing on the good side, history is still magnificent to read and
appreciate.

History plays a major role in our lives, it helps us treasure things that happened
in the past. Though many were forgotten and some are still unreliable or a bunch of
hoax. We can still appreciate it as it is. Giving us the free information of how glorious
our past was, as this can also be a passageway for us to dig deeper in our history.
Guiding us to be more captivated in reading history. But some may also be lead away
through such few information to properly support a past that was observed. But this
does not stop our appreciation in our history today, this helps us. And ultimately easily
attract a reader on our interesting happenings in the past.

C) In the same book, a monument, a relic, a document would remain simply data and
will never be historical source without human element. What does this mean?

Human element is a relevant aspect to the history. It tells, certifies, and supports
the data being mentioned. Without this, historical events and commemorative stories
will have no sense to believe in. In fact, readers will think the story is just a hoax and
fictional when supporting details are not available. Therefore, human element will
greatly affect the history’s authenticity.

Primary sources correlate to the human element of being accountable to the

facts presented. Without it, a history, whatever that is, will just be plain context with no
basis. Human element in terms of history is really important and having to back up the
theories a book, monument, or a relic have will be the biggest factor to it being
authentic. There’s so much history in the world and too much to believe in, so having
that human element will certainly uplift the chances of credibility.
With that, it is not favorable to think that it’s possible to get into the history of
these primary sources without human element. Human element helps readers to be
more enthusiastic and actually think that it is more understandable knowing that there
are humans from the past are a part of it. It is said that a story cannot be constructed or
reconstructed without humans in it because they are the one who participate to make up
a story. History is mainly about the past, and recollections only exist in the human mind.
Artifacts such as a monument, a relic, a document can only be a small part of history
because historians mostly study to interpret why and how things happen. It is also said
that the historical context may only be given if they are placed in a human setting.
These artifacts will remain data without human evidence.

To simply put, in order for it to become a historical source, human activities

should be involved. A monument was built by humans to honor their late king, or
pharaoh. A relic symbolizes a piece of a person’s past. A document is a written work by
an individual that may include keys to understanding something. An object cannot be a
historical source without human intervention. As human element plays a major role in
defining the credibility of a discovery. Leading to such no element, a discovery/data
could easily be false or even easily manipulated leading to an unreliable source.

D) In the historical method as discussed by Gottschalk, the third stage of the historical
method is the examination of genuineness of the source or material. Why, do you think,
the genuineness of the material should first be established before the extraction of
credible particulars would follow?

Genuineness of the material is the first line of historical method. It should be

established before the extraction of credible particulars to certify the said information.
Identifying the material with great background data will make the story certifiable for the
readers to trust. In addition, genuine material changed the overall impact of the history
itself.
A gold is just real gold when it is genuine. As the saying goes, you can’t argue
something without it being real. Because no matter what a historian says, or whatever
anyone says, it is only believable when you have proof to back it up. Checking the
genuineness of the material discovered is like the mastery to proving how legitimate
your work is. Thousands or even millions of people search for something extraordinary
and when one found something with genuineness, it will correlate to the idea of
reputation, credibility, and humanity as it is.

In collating information, and individual should always be first aware of where they
are getting the source of information from. The source of information should be credible
enough to be used as a reference material to different situations. If the source of
information is verifiable enough, then the extraction of credible particulars would follow.
Just like how people shop online nowadays, they always want to make sure that the
product or material that they are buying is genuine or authentic. There must be proofs or
evidence to back up such claim on whether it is genuine or not. In history, readers
appreciate what they have read but would not believe it immediately without evidence
that proves its’ genuineness because the more evidence it has, the more readers would
acknowledge the accuracy of the historical description of what actually happened.

Compliance to this will greatly benefit a historical finding and gain a credible source.
And failure of inspecting this process can lead to unreliable sources, and loosing trust of
other people.
