LLAMAS DONA ACTIVITY 4 #-WPS Office

The document contains answers to questions about mimetic theory, formalism, and applying structuralism to analyze a poem. Regarding mimetic theory, the answer states its failure to account for effort in artistic works. On formalism, it explains the three aspects of language, form, and structure that formalists examine in texts. It defines "defamiliarization" for formalists as using language unconventionally to alter perceptions of familiar objects. The response also analyzes William Wordsworth's poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" from a structuralist perspective, discussing how the speaker compares himself to a lonely cloud wandering without purpose.

Journal Entry # 4

1. Aside from the one mentioned, what do you think are the other failures of Mimetic Theory as
postulated by Aristotle? Justify your answer.

Answer: Aside from the one mentioned, I believe the other failure of Mimetic Theory postulated by
Aristotle is that it fails to work on effort and its quality. Since, it gives so much attention to the
perfectness of imitation or imitating the object, the idea of giving effort is neglected. It fails to prove its
uniqueness and quality as well because there is no application of effort in literary works.

2. Formalists pay attention to three aspects of literary text. What are they?

Explain each aspect.

-what is the goal of formalism?

- what does 'defamiliarization' mean to formalists?

Answer: 2. The three aspects of literarly text are language, form and structure.

language is important to formalist because it carries out meaning with the literature, forms plays the
literariness of a work and structure refers to the technique used.

The goal of formalism is to exlude Mimetic representation in literature. The primary goal for formalist
critics is to determine how such elements work together with the text’s content to shape its effects
upon readers.

It refers to the literary device where by the language are used to in a different manner or the familiar
object are made to look different. It is a process of transformation where language asserts its power to
affect our perception. It is that aspect which differentiates between ordinary usage and poetic usage of
language, and imparts a uniqueness to a literary work.

3. Formalistic approach appropriate to any literary work that you are most familiar with.

Write a reflection on the assigned article.

Answer:

4.Read the poem "Ulysses" by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Apply theory of Structuralism in interpreting the poem as a form of literary criticism.

Answer: The speaker describes the daffodils and see it as a crowd. In the first stanza of the poem he
describe daffodils as golden beside the lake and beneath the trees which he further describe them in
line 6 as sluthering and dancing in the breeze. He sees the daffodils as a crowd of people dancing in
happiness and carefree. He also describe it as the stars that shine and twinkle on the milky way and said
he saw thousands of them. The speaker feels lonely in the beginning of the poem because he couldn't
see the purpose of living. He compared himself to a cloud wondered with no fix direction. He sees his
life as meaningless that has no goals. He said he wondered lonely as a cloud that flows on high over
lakes and hills. He is lonely because he seems lost in life at the beginning . The speaker mean when he
says that the cloud is lonely. He is pertaining to his self. He means that he is lonely and there is the
feeling of detachment from the things around him. He compared his life to a cloud that walks alone and
meaning around without any purpose in life. It may come also that just like the clouds the speaker
thoughts are out of reach. The speaker thought could be distant to his surroundings and he is in deep
thoughts as far as the clouds in the sky.
