1. The document provides instructions for a preliminary examination on environmental science. It contains identification questions and essays to answer. 2. The identification section tests knowledge on key terms like ecosystems, environmental impact statements, and environmental legislation. 3. Essay questions require differentiating environmental assessment documents, calculating potential impacts using a checklist technique, and interpreting the results. 4. The exam aims to evaluate students' understanding of core environmental science concepts and ability to apply analytical skills.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

AE 226 – ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

HONESTY CLAUSE

The students are expected to accept and maintain standard of intellectual and academic
honesty as members of the academic community. The State College believes that the students
should be truthful as a basic and minimum standard of conduct in academic matters, and that they
must make their own endeavors to submit the materials for credit.

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following questions correctly. NO ERASURES. ANYONE CAUGHT

CHEATING WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET A GRADE OF 5.0. Affix and Sign the Honesty Statement
in your class work.

I. IDENTIFICATION. Identify the correct answer asked in the following questions or

statements. NO ERASURES. ANY MODIFICATION in your answers is considered
incorrect. (1 point each)

1. Interdependent populations of organisms interacting with their physical and

chemical environment. Ecosystem
2. A detailed document that not only specifies the negative impacts but also the
positive impacts to the environment, contains proposed action, lists of
preparers, etc. is called .
Environmental Impact Statement or EIS.
3. This bond is preferred since the overhead costs of financing it is lower and its
greater security allows to be offered at lower rate of interest. GO Bond
4. The National Solid Waste Management Commission is composed of how many
members from the government? 17 members
5. Primarily used by the aircraft for its ground movement (taxiing) or to start
the main engines. Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
6. An interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological and
information sciences (including ecology, biology, physics, chemistry, plant
science, zoology, mineralogy, oceanography, limnology, soil science, geology and
physical geography, and atmospheric science) to the study of the environment,
and the solution of environmental problems. Environmental Science
7. NEPA established this council to ensure that federal agencies meet their
obligations under NEPA. Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ)
8. A law that sets national policy to encourage “productive and enjoyable harmony”
between people and their environment.
National environmental Policy Act or NEPA
9. The law aims to protect the country's water bodies from pollution from land-
based sources (industries and commercial establishments, agriculture and
community/household activities). It provides for comprehensive and integrated
strategy to prevent and minimize pollution through a multi-sectoral and
participatory approach involving all the stakeholders. R.A. 9275 or The
Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004
10. It is the collection of laws and regulations pertaining to air quality, water quality,
the wilderness, endangered wildlife, and other environmental factors.

III. ESSAY

1. Differentiate the three documents issued from the EA result. (10 points)

The three documents needed for acquiring federal permit or fund for a project of
federal government are FONSI, EA and EZS that was issued from the environment
assessment. First is Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) Such a stand-alone
finding results when potential environmental impacts are compared to a checklist of
significant impacts, with the result that no significant impact can be identified. Second is for
Environmental Assessment (EA) or a detailed assessment of potential environmental
impact resulting in one of two conclusions: either the EA must be expanded to a full-scale
environmental impact statement or a FONSI results from the EA. Lastly, Environmental
Impact Statement (EZS) it is a must assess in detail the potential environmental impacts
of a proposed action and alternative actions. Additionally, the agencies must generally follow
a detailed public review of each EIS before proceeding with the project or permit. It should
be noted that both positive and negative impacts are included; i.e., “impact” does not imply
“adverse impact”.

2. By using the checklist technique below, a) Calculate the product and total of each
potential impact (7 points) then b) interpret the results. (3 points)

According to the gathered details above we have then obtained a total of 37 that will
be same as calculated alternatives for the course action. GHG EMISSIONS got a product of
16 from its importance and magnitude, same goes with noise that accumulate a total of 20,
then land utilization that got a total of 3, congestion that got 4 and waste that got a total of
6. We need to bear in mind that provided jobs that got a total of (-12) are still under positive
impact, as distinct from the negative environmental impacts of the other variables, and is
arbitrarily assigned a negative value, reason why it was subtracted to other variables.
