Activity 9.1 Reflecting on Learning from Chapter 9

During the course of your study of this text, we recommend that you keep a learning journal to track and

reflect on some or all of the following:

 Thoughts and reactions in response to the text

o Consider what are grades for. What is giving grades motivated by? Standardized tests,

curriculum, student’s IEP goals, etc.

o A teacher must be able to break down what students’ grades mean. They should be able

to be clearly communicated to the student’s family.

o Grades should motivate lesson design change

o Clear purpose, clear target, clear design, formative usefulness, effective communication

o My experience I had many different grading systems, traditional and nontraditional in my

education depending on the school and curriculum they used.

o Grades should not be used as a direct motivator. Learning should be encouraged not just

for the grade.

o Teachers have to make sure grades accurately reflect a students abilities.

 What you are confused about and what you now understand that you didn’t before

o Understand various purposes/motivations behind grading

o Understand keeping formative and summative records. I have a lot of experience with

formative assessments because they are used often with young children.

o Understand how to summarize assessments. This will be helpful for my F3 and F5.

 Questions you have now?

o Do many schools require teachers to build their own assessments or are they typically

provided with the curriculum?

o What types of grading are the most effective?

1
o How will I motivate students?

 Barriers that may need to be overcome in order to implement what the text is teaching, along with

possible solutions

o Constantly reflect on what grading is motivated by

o Need more experience in face-to-face classroom

 Implementation activities you have tried along with observations

o In my practicum I have been practicing assessing students and collecting data about their

progress.

o Electronic plan book where you can list standards and post assessments to keep track of

student progress.

 Changes in student attitudes, behaviors, and achievement that you believe are attributable to what

you are implementing as a result of your study

o Evaluate how I will assess in my future class. How will I keep track of students’ progress

and make sure my data accurately reflects their skills?

 Your level of mastery of the chapter learning targets

o My level of mastery on the subject is 8/10. I want to have more opportunities to practice

assessments in the classroom. I have a hard time understanding the application of some

assessments without having the the ability to watch them in practice or try them myself.
