Computers are nowadays very widely used in business, industry, science, education,
medicine, travel and other fields of human activity. In Latin, “to compute” means “to find the
total of” or “to calculate.” A computer gives answers to our problems by taking the
information or data (facts) with which it works. It thus solves problems according to our
instructions.

A computer can solve mathematical equations, engineering problems of building, and


electric power distribution. It counts, lists, compares and rearranges different details on a
subject according to detailed programme instructions. In industry, it is used to control
different manufacturing (production) operations and machine tools. In hospitals, it is used to
arrange and control laboratory and hospital instruments and medicines. It is used to guide
and control the movements of ships, airplanes, and spaceships. It is used to design
buildings, roads, playgrounds, marketplaces, parks, and so on. Different patterns or designs
of cloth and decoration objects can be had on computers.

The use of computers in education started in the 1960s. In the advanced countries,
instructional computers are used in two ways to provide a direct presentation of data (facts)
or to act as a teacher to test the understanding and knowledge of the student. The
computer asks student questions and then gets ready answers. It corrects the answers and
then goes on to the more difficult questions.

Now computer typing is getting very popular. In it, moving rays of light from a laser lens are
used. The typing is very fast and accurate as well as beautiful and in different forms. Thus,
composing on computers has brought about a revolution in high-grade typing and printing.

Interesting use of computers is in music, to compose different new musical tunes and tones
from some given sounds stored in them. So a computer can be programmed to produce
music in different old and new styles.
The Internet is an international computer network through which computer users all over the
world can communicate and exchange information and ideas.” It is now in wide use and en
has made the exchange of information in all the arts and sciences easy and fast. For the A

The memory of the computer is one of its main functions. All kinds of information and facts .
can be stored in a computer for further use. So a small disc (or disk) or cassette can have
material that many books and hundreds of files might contain. Whole libraries can be
computerized. Now, in our country, the record of all the country’s identity cards is
computerized. The record of millions of hospital patients, expenditure on defense and
different government departments and budget figures, besides other kinds of details, is
recorded in computers.

There are advantages (benefits) as well as disadvantages to using computers. They save
our time in solving our technical and social problems and in keeping (maintaining) records.
They make teaching easy and students feel independent while learning through them. But
they also mechanize our life too much. We begin using our minds less and less and begin
depending on machines more and more. We spend big amounts of money on educational
computer programmes that make teaching a dull affair without the interesting question-
answer free classroom atmosphere.

Computers are now. a necessary part of our modern life. We should get the best out of
them and learn to put them to the best of use. We should have an independent computer
industry producing all sorts of computers and their components (parts).
